What are the tallest,widest wheels I can fit without cutting?

I am working towards completing my resto and at the point of choosing custom rims and tires.

I want to go with taller than 15" wheels (maybe 17"?) and go with the widest rim/tire combo that will fit without any mods to the car.

I plan to leave the back of the car at roughly stock height and wind the front down a tad to give it a tougher stance.

Appreciate any advice or pics or whatever from you guys.

BTW, what is "stock ride height"? 

For some people it means the body is perched at the same distance off the ground as stock. 

Other people mean the suspension is unaltered.  So the center points of each wheel is in the same place in the wheelwells.
