Engine Goes "chirp, chirp, chirp"

When I fired up my 383 this afternoon, I kept hearing a chirping sound that went along with the rhythm of the engine.  I thought it was a belt or something, but when I did a walk around, I could only hear it at the exhaust.  It sounded like it was coming from the passenger side exhaust, but I figure it must be something in the engine.  Anyone know what that is?

sound like a metal to metal squeak? Like maybe exhaust pipe to frame rubbing?

zstalker

pulley bearing on an accessory going out?  accessory mounted out of alignment? belt loose?

This ground is not the rock I thought it to be.
I was wrong.

I don't think it's the exhaust pipe rubbing anything.  Here's a link to a sound clip of it.  It sounds like it might be under the hood, but when I walked around before, it sounded like the back side of the car.  I wonder if that may have been an echo.

If you have stock exhaust manifolds and the sound is coming from the pass side, it could be the heat riser flap working loose

Maybe an alternator bushing or a water pump bearing.

Pop the valve covers off, start the engine, check to see if the rocker shafts are getting plenty of oil. I had this happen to a 318 I had in my old 72 SE. The driver's side rocker shaft wasn't getting any oil, the rockers squeaked like hell, all of the rockers and the shaft were ruined, and one of the pushrods had shoved it's way through the rocker arm. One of the cam bearings had turned in it's bore, cutting off the oil supply :flame:...Dropped in a 440 :icon_smile_big:...No more squeaks :icon_smile_cool:

Simple.  You must have a birds nest inside your engine compartment and they are uspet that you are starting the engine.   ;D  Seriously though, I had a  growling noise that would be like that and it turned out to be my alternator bearings going.  Can you isolate the noise with the hood up?

Did you find out what was wrong, I listened to your soundclip and it sounds just like mine. I have checked "everything", I ran the engine without any belts and its still there. Any more suggestions ??? :icon_smile_sad:

Just found this "old" thread and just thought I'd share my experiance with you all!! I had the chirping sound in my car, not when it was standing still and reving, only at a certain acceleration, a normal acceleration from standing still. Very annoying. Anyway, I found out it was my headers, (Hookers comp.) on the right side I believe it was #4 and #8 tube a bit down was to tight and was making a noise?? I just dented the tubes a bit and the noise was gone. Such a relief it was, it had been a  :brickwall: for so long!!!  ;)
