unrestored 68 Coronet R/T on ebay ! with GT2 paint code

 never seen this paint code before , although I don't much about 68 tags  

 looks a good car to restore  , if your into coronets  
oh yeah , Green cars always survive

You are right.... for some reason, only the Green cars seem to survive.

It is a two tone paint code.
It has a medium green painted body (T-code) and a dark green roof (G-code).
Being a two tone paint job it gets the "2" at the end.

If it would have been just "T"-green it would have read TT1 on the tag

two-tone paint cars are relatively RARE, but green on green makes sense as GREEN was popular in the late '60s/early '70s

all things being equal - with 3 of the 17 STANDARD available colors being GREEN, that's 17.6%, we should be seeing lots of green cars of that era

on the above paint chart:

C, D, H, & K are c-body ONLY
3 & 6 are (spring '68 release) Charger ONLY

& a pet peeve - replace "poly" (PPG's name) with "metallic" and you'll have the OFFICIAL DODGE names for the paint codes

& notice how much "racing green metallic" was painted on the (roof,) fender & quarter tops before the roof being masked and the body painted "medium green metallic"

the sun only baked the top layer off

I agree. That would follow the usual paint logic. To conserve paint you spray the lightest shades first and work your way up to the darkest for last.

I was waiting for the part of the story that would be "told for generations to come". I guess you have to buy it to hear it.

the roof (smaller portion) was painted "G" first un-masked, regardless of color (but in this case the darker green)
the roof was masked then
the body portion was painted "T"

exposure to the sun has baked the paint off the top surfaces: roof, hood, decklid, & tops of fenders, doors, quarters
----- the paint was the thickest where "medium green metallic" was painted over "racing green metallic" & the sun has "removed" the top layer

Who ever winds up buying this Coronet, especially if it's a member on here, I have a nice set of front fenders, front valance, front bumper, rear bumper, tail panel, rear quarter extensions, grille, head light bezels, deck lid, hood(flat), dash parts.

You certainly do! They probably ran it through like a vinyl top car for the initial, lighter green paint, masked off and painted the darker shade. So in some areas you have a full light green finish, in other its will have less to no light green finish underneath (like the center of the roof). At least that process would make the most sense as it uses an existing procedure for vinyl top cars.

Why does it seem odd to me that they would paint a car with one shade of green only in certain areas and then paint a 2nd shade of green on the whole car as it was coming down the line? Has anyone ever heard of this before?
