That steampunk riveted '68 is a complete car.  Maybe not even too far from running condition if the body wasn't crumbling off it so badly.  That's worth a fair bit more than the sum of the parts, especially with complete stuff like that becoming harder to find on anything that isn't already restored.  If you are eyeballing it and trying to add up which parts you want then you're not counting everything it offers for some buyers.  

Try flipping through a Year One catalog and just looking at "little stuff" like brackets & hardware.  You can add up thousands of bucks in a matter of minutes.

If it was a Camaro or Mustang it would be a perfect candidate for a Dynacorn replacement unibody.

Yeah from that perspective you are correct.


From the perspective of restoring it, it would eat up $20K without blinking.  It's interesting to me as I've got a really solid, great running 70...a couple guys have posted "looking to buy a 70..."
I've responded and thrown out a ball park price (mid 20's) and never heard back from them (which is fine...I've always been on the fence about selling anyway) But then I see stuff like this pull in $10K that needs $20K in parts and who knows how many hours of labor.

It's true that the cheapest complete projects are overpriced compared to the amount of work they need.  

A $30 car is done.  A $20 car needs another $15.  But a car that needs $25 doesn't sell for $5, it sells for $15.  


There is more demand for cars the cheaper you get.  People have a hard time putting together bigger piles of money at once.  (Therefore banks & credit cards exist.)

I'm just saying there is more to valuing a project car than just computing what it would take for a pro to put it back to stock.

I have 4 Dodge Chargers. 3 of which are in rough condition, but totally restorable and certain to be a profitable venture for someone. My intention were to line up restoration projects for the next year but with my own knowledge of the projects or even the cars or mechanics being limited, when the person I had in charge of the process decided to bow, I was left holding the reassured bag of crap. So - firstly the 3 are 68-69 Dodge Chargers. all 3 have Free and Clear Titles in hand. They have motors in them as well as an array of different things going for them. One has the original Charger seats. Most all the glass is there. Lots of the original molding and much more. I want $15k for the three of them together. That's just breaking even and am not interested in taking make for offers. By all mean feel to make and offer, but be aware I'm not trying to profit here as much as I am just trying to get out from underneath them. The forth Charger is quite a bit better shape and if I was introduced to the right person would still possibly be interested in doing it up right or at least doing enough to it to make some easy profit. I have quite a bit for parts as well for all em. I bought 3 manual transmission that I have on hand. Each worth quite a bit. Also some '70 fenders that are hard to get ahold of. Just looking for someone who's interested buy the whole lot of it, but will gladly split up for the right offer. I also have a 1967 GTO that has been being worked on for 2 months. It's currently in the final stages of body work nearing the paint stage and I may have interest in selling it as well. It has about $7k in parts already purchased and on hand. Please call

When I was just a teenager, piling up a collection of parts and then working like a dog to put them all together into a functioning vehicle wasn't all that far-fetched. I know several friends that did-it successfully (they would have been walking otherwise, myself included).  I believe that process is still alive and well today with more-recent vehicular offerings (say...w/i the last 20-years, or so) in that the parts needed are "relatively" cheap and readily available. IMHO, doing that now with a 2nd generation Charger borders on the certifiably insane.  If you really want one of these cars, buying one that isn't a complete roach to start with is really....the only way to go for most of us.

There are folks that might fit into what can only be called an "exception". They already possess the technical know-how, the tools, the good place to do it (no small thing), and have accumulated the significant (and now very obscure!) pile of requisite parts to pull it off successfully. Even with all of that, the time and money needed to get to completion will be quite significant, maybe $30K (maybe more).  Do yourself a favor, protect your family situation (& your sanity), buy them close-to (if not already) done and drive-able.

To me your buying a set of used scratched up glass and some windshield mouldings and a dash frame. Whats "there" or original parts are junk throw away.
