So in my last post i showed everyone my 2 1968s that i bought . Im wondering how to decode vins on these cars? or is it the fender tags you decode on these cars??  i found the fender tag on one of the cars but i didnt see it on the other one. Are they all located in the same place or can they be found in different areas.
:nana: :brickwall:
Also, I was under the impression that all 1968 model chargers had the vin starting with XS,well both of mine start with XP? i thought XP was only 69 models and XS was 68 standard and 69 model RT.  Maybe i was way off lol, someone shed some Light!

fender tag is in the same place ,left inner fender under the hood, XS vin is R/t, XP is non R/T.

Thanks for clearing that up. Only other question is do you use the vin to decode or the fender tag? what is the purpose of fender tag.

Im sorry im having to ask these questions but im a newbie to mopars. My mustang had to be decoded via the warranty number but i assume that is differently entirely than a mopar. :coolgleamA: :eek2:

You can decode both but the fender tag or data plate will tell you much more like what options it came with. If you can find a Broadcast sheet or Build sheet behind the rear seat it will tell you even more, much more. LEON.

Ok guys thanks. I've decided both vins turns out both were non R/T cars 318 and made in the Michigan plant .
Pretty much just your ordinary run of the mill chargers, but that's ok because I don't necessarily have to worry about 100% orginanality since the are plain Janers . Lol any way what is the best way to clean off a fender tag to make it legible. The top half of it is difficult to read.

soak the tag in evapo rust, sometimes you can read the tag better from the backside of tag.

What CDR said. ^^^

If you can, take a pic of the backside of the fender tag(s) and then reverse the image with Microsoft paint or any other photo shop program. If you cannot do the reverse part, post the pic in here and I can do it for you. Or you can just hold it up to a mirror.

Just my  :Twocents:

You can also take a rubbing of the back side of the tag with a crayon and some paper. Then take the pic of the rubbing and reverse.

Once your able to read it go to www.mymopar.com and punch in the numbers for vin and fender tag to decode them.

Aswome! my only problem now is going to be getting the fender tag off. I went to remove it and some idiot had stripped the screws at one time or another. so now i am left with the dilemma off trying to get it off without dammaging it . Can i get to the screws from the bottom side maybe? try and back them out that way :icon_smile_question:

Take a die grinder & cut a big slit into head of screw & then remove with big regular straight ended (non phillips) screwdriver. LEON.

What, no die grinded, (that would be my first choice though), well then try this. Heat up a rod red hot the same diameter of the screw, now hold the hot rod on the screw head 10 seconds. Now take a Phillips head screw driver and tap it with a hammer on the screw head, turn it first tight (CW) just a little to crack loose the screw then turn screw out (CCW). This might just catch enough head. Do one screw at a time. Makes you wonder how many times somebody screwed those screws and why.

I'd grind the screw  from the underside then with a center punch tap it out from underneath that way you don't risk damaging the id plate with grinders etc  :Twocents:
