Hey all, I am going to remove the old Intake Manifold this weekend and replace it with a year correct one.  I am going to list out the procedure below to the best of my knowledge and if you guys could please check it over and comment as to helpful tips, suggestions or corrections, I would greatly appreciate it.

Engine:  72' 400
Current Intake Manifold:  67 383 HP, Square Bore
Replacement Intake Manifold:  72 400, Spreadbore
Carb:  72' Thermoquad with Choke Thermostat

1) Clean the top of the engine as best I can without getthing anything in any holes (Valve Covers and Carb already removed)
2) Remove current Intake manifold (After unbolting and detaching tranny linkage, etc)  I believe the Distributer is not in the way of removing or setting it.
3) Remove current gaskets and valley pan gasket.
4) Clean gasket area of any gunk, grease, etc
5) Set new Valley Pan gasket and tack spray Intake manifold Gaskets onto heads and Intake Manifold (2 sets)
6) Carefully set Intake manifold into place being sure not to unseat any gaskets, etc.  Make sure it sits at the right height as all holes line up.
7) Bolt Intake Manifold into position using the diagram in the Service manual. (strangely only listed in the small block section)
8) Bolt everything else back on....

Anything I am missing, etc?

Thanks a ton in advance.

No need to remove the valve covers or the distributor. You will have to remove the flat steel bar at the front and back of the engine to get the valley pan out. Each bar is held down by three bolts. You can't miss it. That's how the 440 is. I'm pretty sure the 400 is the same.
My 1969 Charger. RIP......Rest in pieces.

I would use a FelPro 1214 intake gasket & block the heat cross over port unless you plan to drive this in cold weather

I understand this is an old post, but my question is when removing the intake, isn't it necessary to drain the coolant ?

I have a 440 with edel heads and rpm performer intake

thanks

You don't need to drain the coolant.

ok, that makes the job really easy then.

To be really sleazeball, with stock parts, you don't even have to change the intake gasket, verified using the carb cleaner trick looking for vacuum leaks.
