68 or 70 Charger?

Hey Guys,

Searched google from corner to corner (as far as I am aware) and can't find anything on these 2 cars.

I am trying to get a photo of a black 70 Charger next to a black 68 Charger.

The 68 Charger and 70 Charger both have an open type grill.

I like the look of long tail lights more... So I opted for a 1969 Charger and then I can always just change the grill out to a 68 if that is the front I wanted.

But the debate in my mind is, do I actually want the 68 front or the 70 front... if it is the 68, then everything goes as planned, get the 69 (no need to change tail lights this way) and just change grill in future.

If I want the 70 front... then I should just get the 70 otherwise I would have to change the fenders, the hood, and the bumper, and the panel under the bumper (I assume) to make the 69 have that front.

What to me makes the debate?

Well every photo I find of a black 70 Charger (Vin Diesel), the headlights are visible. I have seen 68 chargers with the headlights visible and somehow it looks odd compare to the 70.

Looking for single photos of 70 Chargers and 68 chargers... again, the 70s some how seem more fat at the front, like more muscle rather than sharp rectangle... looks more beefy rather than classic... but this could be due to the angle of the photos... I never found 68 chargers on same angles as the Vin Diesel sort charger, so perhaps that gives that illusion, don't know.

Just as example:

Picture 1: http://assets.bauer-wolke.co.uk/imagegen/p/800/600/s3/digital-cougar-assets-uk/CCFS/2015/03/14/235239-7F/Dodge5.jpg
Picture 2: http://gearheads.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/Doms-charger1.jpg
Picture 3: http://gearheads.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/fast-furious-1970-dodge-charger.jpg
Picture 4: https://hunterbuur.files.wordpress.com/2014/03/dodge_charger_-_the_fast_and_the_furious.jpg

Then you look at the 68's

Picture 1: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/25/30/f1/2530f1c926ae1deb86dcd4d32a005999.jpg
Picture 2: http://bringatrailer.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/1968_Dodge_Charger_383_V8_Front_1.jpg

Like The angles are different, the blower is different, one doesn't have the hood on (dont know how much that would affect the look), just seems the round lights with the square like front is weird, while with the 70 you could drive it with them open all the time as the sides are slightly curved to suit the round shape of the lights...

Closed grill they both look really good...

From drag racing:
1970: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/TpbJTAwlXk0/hqdefault.jpg
1968: http://www.geocities.ws/gtsreg/PSMCDR2009/pair61.JPG

So yeah, is it angles or is there an actual more 'round' like look to the front of the 70 above the 68, something just looks different even when the chromes painted.

The 68 Charger front tends to be more flat/rectangle like on the sides while the 70 wrap around gives it a slight curve around the sides of the grill, which then, once open and circle lights are visible... it is more fitting.

Dont know, just seems the 70 Charger with the Roots style blower sticking out the hood seems to look that little bit more aggressive/muscle like than the 68 Charger with a roots style blower out the front due to that very sharp/rectangle like finish...

Hard to explain...

Just look at one, than the other, than vice versa few times, and you start to notice how one seems to just have a 'different' look to it simply because of that.

So that is why I wondered does anyone have a photo of their black 68 or 70 charger next to a black 68/70 charger?

Seeing them together would probably help than any amount of words could simply because the angle of the photo would then be the same as it is the same photo!

Yes I know I get caught up on minor things, but when you are about to blow 40,000, those minor things matter.

I'd say just buy a 1970. Problem solved. LEON.

Why settle for second best (68 or 70), buy a 69 and have the best year for a Charger!    :icon_smile_big:

68 by far, not even close. It's hands down the best of the three. Even with the open head light doors during the daylight because they have the bezel surrounds, something that 69s and 70s can't claim. :nana:

Attached are some pics of some black 68s that I got from the internet that made it to my my collection.

I'm not a fan of the wheels on the Charger in the 1st pic.

Forget the pilot cars, go 70...the pinnacle of the breed.

Before the '70s, the Chargers made were just practice runs.

They got everything perfect for the 1970 models.

Then, knowing full well that they could not improve on perfection, they started all over for '71.

Just try to find decent '70 fenders and hood.  :Twocents:

That's funny because you can see how they got it right out of the gate with the 68 with the production numbers telling it all. 68 was the highest year built and the 69 drippy booger grille was not a hit & the production numbers went down, so they eliminated it in 1970. However, the damage was done & the clown lips bumper was even worse than the drippy booger grille and the numbers reflect it. You might say that the clown lips bum[per was the beginning of the end for when the Charger totally jumped the shark in 71.

70 model was the test bed for all the innovations ( as mentioned above )  that they were going to put in the 71 :Twocents:

70 charger in my opinion is the best charger, high impact colors, wrap around front bumper, pistol grip shifter, high back seats, six pack option, Go Wing, longitude stripe the list goes on. :Twocents:

Who in their right mind would say

"The science should not stand in the way of this."?

Science is just observation and hypothesis.  Policy stands in the way.........

Or maybe it protects us.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

Just like all other "firsts" - first girlfriend, first kiss, first beer, first Rocky movie, first Terminator, first Godfather, first win drag racing, first professional football/baseball/hockey game, first live concert, first dog, first fish caught, first deer shot, first car, first ride in a Mopar, first start of your car.  The first year 1968 is the best most pure muscle car design.  Its the same for the first year, 1970, for the Cuda and Challenger being the best year design.  In the end, they are all the best muscles every to run the roads of America but there is only one first.

I say pick one of the three, don't bastardize one together.

Thanks for the replies...

A lot of  going through the thread.

I had a feeling it would end up that way.

In terms of "70s had high impractical colours" and all the other stuff as to why they are good...

I want Black Charger, BDS Blower out the hood and I will get my own seats made for it.

So - Which had colours, doesn't matter. Which had high seats, again irrelevant.

I'm just trying to decide on the more square like front (1968) or the slightly curved front (1970).

Both Black, Both with blowers out the hood.

I know im caught up on something really dumb... but hey, if i wasn't, I wouldn't be me.

Thats why if anyone has from any previous car shows, friends they can go see sometime soon, or anything... black 70 charger next to black 68... that would be the most helpful thing you could provide me. Couple shots front and angles of the 2 cars side by side.

Pwwwweeeease?  :icon_smile_big:

look at it like woman , do you want the "square " bony one or the one with the curves

and as far as the 70 cuda being better than the 71...  well
