TIRE "Translator" help needed?

Getting ready for rims and tires I found a reasonably priced package. Picking 16"x8" rims the computer matches 225/55R16 95V tires. Think that would look good on my 70 Charger?

That's 20mm wider than the tire for a '93 IROC Daytona. Seems to me to be a bit small for a large car like a Charger.

Thats 25.7 tall and 8.8 wide. Its about stock height and slightly wider. Its simple math to figure out pmetric. 225 is yhe width of the tire in millimeters. So take 225 divided by 25.4 (mm per inch) and you get 8.85 inches wide. 55 is the aspect ratio of sidewall vs tread width as a percentage, so its 55 percentage of the tread is the height of the sidewall. So 8.85 times 55 percent or .55 is roughly 4.86 inches. Multiply that by 2 because there are 2 sections of sidewall per side of the tire, then add 16 for the 16 inch rim and walah, you have a height and width.

Joe's math is spot on and explains how all the tire numbers factor in.  If you're not up to doing all the math, I used this site extensively when trying to decide on wheels and tires.  In addition to tire height it gives a visual for sidewall/rim ratio too:

225 in the rear?  I agree that would be a bit narrow for a Charger, and rather narrow for an 8" rim.  You wouldn't have much sidewall sticking out and it would be much easier to get some curb rash.  Give some thought to 255 on an 8" rim.  255/50/R16 would give you a 26" tire and more sidewall bulge for a bit more of a muscle car look.

If you want to have the same size at all 4 corners it can still work.  I recently put 255/45R18 (27" height) on the front of my 68 Charger without any issues.

I just finished spending way too much time looking at wheel/tire combos, and 16" rims seem to be kind of an odd duck in between the 'old school' 14-15" rims and the more modern 17-18" sizes.  There just don't seem to be nearly as many tires available for 16" rims.  Not that they can't look great or perform well, just that you might be limited in your tire options.  16" wheels seem to be much more common for light trucks than cars these days.

Thanks bunches guys! I want all 4 corners the same size and with 11 3/4 factory type disk up front thinking 15" cutting it too close. I see their calculator plugs in tire size by matching factory closely now.  This is the place I was shopping:

I agree with funknut,  even my little Colorado Pickup has 235/50 R17 tires, forget if it has 8, 9 or 10" rims.  The Charger might look like it's wobbling around on high heels, for sure with the old F70/14's that came on my original Charger.

Neal, I run dr. Diff front disk brakes which are 11.75" rotors and my 15x 7 vector rims clear it. I see you are going wider with 8" and I'm not sure if it's the width that effects caliper clearance too. Anyway, just some info to help you out. I also went with 245/60 all around. Hope it helps

Thanks! ALL advise welcome! I'm trying to keep it kinda simple...Tan Top and I were talking last year about 15x8's, he's got steelies on his. Boy you change one tire aspect and selection drops from 40 to 4!

IMHO... the thread width can't be smaler than 255 on a Charger... 245 works too but just if keeping stock rim width ( up to 6" ). On 7" or 8" I wouldn't go smaller than 255

height... something in between 27 or 28" diameter.

I also choose same size on 4 corners, so on 15x7 or 8, TO ME 255/60-15 is THE size to keep it good looking.

now on 16"... get the tire keeping those sizes. maybe something like 255/55-16 ? do they exist ?

A 26" tall tire that is 245 mm wide will be tough to keep clear up front. Can be done but not bone stock. I agree, if you are going for the touring stance, wider is better. Go with 275s on all 4 to keep the pig planted.

255/60 16" is 26"x10" .....too big? (Stock set-up, stock height.)
