I was always told it's also illegal to sell a vin tag and title for a car. I sent the seller a message on EBay asking if he knows what he is doing is technically illegal. Here's the response I got....


'It is only fraud if you do not disclose it. 1971 rebodied Cuda went thru Barret Jackson and presented as such.thank you for your thoughts though. However,I am selling a clean titled Satellite and clean titled Road Runner parts.buyer knows full well of the condition of both.'

It's not illegal to sell a VIN tag and title. It's illegal to affix a VIN issued to one car to another.

It depends. In NY state (as one example) mere possession of a loose VIN tag is a felony. Selling one is also a felony.

Wisconsin allows tags & titles to be sold as collectibles for some reason, but if used for another car it is then a felony.
