Dude had a lot of faith in that system I guess....I wouldn't.   :rotz:

Joshua D. Brown, 40, of Canton, Ohio, died in the accident May 7 in Williston, Florida, when his car's cameras failed to distinguish the white side of a turning tractor-trailer from a brightly lit sky and didn't automatically activate its brakes, according to government records obtained Thursday.

Frank Baressi, 62, the driver of the truck and owner of Okemah Express LLC, said the Tesla driver was "playing Harry Potter on the TV screen" at the time of the crash and driving so quickly that "he went so fast through my trailer I didn't see him."

"It was still playing when he died and snapped a telephone pole a quarter mile down the road," Baressi told The Associated Press in an interview from his home in Palm Harbor, Florida. It was not immediately clear whether Tesla's systems would allow a movie to play while the car was being driven and there were no references to the movie in initial police reports.

Here is my observation, if you "Modify" then "Save" your post some times the link will reappear in "black print", if you do not see the "blue print link", go back/"Modify" your post again and move the black print link one space/place and "Save". Now the link should be "blue print" and clickable.

Quotechuck these into the mix and disaster is only around the corner so to speak  Wink   https://techcrunch.com/2016/04/25/the-driverless-truck-is-coming-and-its-going-to-automate-millions-of-jobs/

Driverless trucks?  Interesting.

They would work so much better if we gave driverless trucks their own lanes on the highway.  That would make it WAY more efficient and take out most of the collision risk in one fell swoop.

And with so much more control/safety being achieved, they could hook more trailers behind each cab.

Develop this idea far enough, and eventually you would get . . . trains.  Which is what we should have been doing in the first place.

Why does anyone need the car to drive for them? Have we become so lazy that we don't want to be bothered to pay attention and drive the vehicle? We will see more of these types of accidents from autonomous cars because lots of people (particularly the younger generations) will trust their lives to technology.
If you don't want to drive your vehicle, why don't you car pool, take a bus or train? Then, you will be able to spend all your time during your commute texting and you and I will both be safe, because you won't be texting and driving, endangering my life and my family's life.

People don't NEED to have a self-driving car.

But when you spend 10 or 15 hours a week commuting . . . it's understandable to want some of that time back.

Carpooling & bussing isn't practical for millions of people.
Most of the USA's cities/suburbs were formed in the automobile era, without any urban planning.  Things are too spread out for mass transit to work in any real way.  Public/mass transit only works well in dense compact cities like NYC or San Francisco.

UPDATE from Washington: Tesla driver speeding before crash.
The driver killed when his Tesla sedan crashed while in self-driving mode was traveling at 9 mph above the speed limit just before hitting the side of a tractor trailer, federal accident investigators said Tuesday. Data downloaded from the Tesla Model S shows the vehicle was traveling at 74 mph in a 65 mph zone on a divided highway in Williston, Florida, near Gainesville, the Nation Transportation Safety Board said. The driver, Joshua Brown, 40, of Canton Ohio, was using the cruise control and lane-keeping features at the time, the report said.

The extra 9 mph was probably not what got him killed.

But it may be enough to get Tesla off the hook in court.

cooldude

Who would even want a self driving car anyway?

What if you got in and told it to take you where you wanted to go,but took you somewhere else instead?

I mean, you get in and the doors lock (and you cant open them). Then the cars starts off,and you think you are going to be driven to somewhere cool, like a Mopar show.

Instead, you are taken to your Mother-in-laws house!   :flame:

(Maybe she bought an override code to your car)

And now,you have to spend the day listening to your inlaws drone on and on about how its a bad thing to "waste" money on old Mopars, and how you should get a hair cut, and get a better job, and on and on...

Driverless cars? Not for me. :brickwall:

You don't have to buy one.

However, I would love if all the texting teenage girls, and d.u.i. offenders all bought a self driving car tomorrow. The roads would become much safer overnight.

You still benefit from autonomous vehicles, even if you don't own one.
