...made a factory-ish style fan shroud for my *cough* "direct fit" Griffin :) Anyhoo... came out OK I think for some 3/16" ABS, a soldering iron, and a blow torch.

More pics here if anyone wants to see them... https://www.facebook.com/plum500/photos/?tab=album&album_id=557255747811419

That's some fine fab work there!  Fit looks perfect and the finish looks professional.   :2thumbs:

Out of curiosity, how much time do you have in that project?

plum500

Thanks!   Yeah, it's one of those things I can now say I have done...but it took a long time. Probably 5 days various amounts of time/progress.. could probably do another quicker now though.

I may clean up those few shiny spots that need filling around the L pieces, but that can wait... it's not really noticeable at all in the bay as is.

Looks great to me!  Fine work.  :2thumbs:

That's pretty cool if you ask me ! I have been thinking of making a shroud. I was thinking metal but this may be easier to work with. What did u use for bonding/ glue ?

redgum78

:drool5:   You have some good skills there!

No glue at all! You can weld ABS with a soldering iron. Just make sure it's hot enough. I found the small 25w ones not hot enough... I used 85w iron. A gun would work for small repairs, but not for anything this size. I typically did a couple passes on things. One to make sure the edges were tacked together, and a second pass adding a thin piece to fill. Just have to make sure that you go slow enough so that everything is good and melted together.

This stuff also scores really well with a sharp knife. The long cuts in particular are much easier done that way vs. a jigsaw.

Forms really well with heat. This part was done just by waving it back and forth through the flame a few times (so as not to catch fire, just heat). Pair of gloves... bend it, and hit it with cold water.

interesting!. where did you source your ABS from ? How thick did you use?

plum500

Got it from http://plasticworld.ca/  ...

It's 3/16" and something they stock, so you can just go in and have them cut a piece to size.
