it seems most '73-'74 b-bodies with a 440 have A/C & 3.23s (or 3.21s)
anyone have a 440 car with factory 3.55 axle??

VegasCharger

Especially if you add an SE model. Never seen a 1973-74 Charger SE w/o A/C.

Sorry I couldn't answer your question.

400sforever

ive got one with a/c tho, but no build sheet. car had 4.56s with I got it so no way to verify factory gearing on it

If the car was built at the Lynch Road plant (A in the VIN) and you still have the fender tag, the axle assembly code, which includes gearing, will be on the tag.
Seeking information on '69 St. Louis plant VINs, SPDs and VONs. Buld sheets and tag pictures appreciated. Over 3,000 on file thanks to people like you.

400sforever

are you sure about that on a 73/74 tag? ive got a lynch road 4 speed 74 with build sheet and fender tag with no ratio code on the tag?

the "AXLE ASSEMBLY" part number is on the Lynch Rd. tag - top line 988 / 989 / 992 / etc.

excellent im goin to go look at mine and see whats on it there. I know it was a 3.55 car from the factory. . I just looked and after my interior code on the tag it has a 000 code and then a 925 code (the top line of my tag has seguences of 5 to 6 numbers and then it has a 701 code and another long number sequence after that). . is that code only on the top line of lynch road tags? if so I learned something today

In the '80s my 2 brothers bought '73 Chargers, I had my '68 at the time (none with A/C) ......

we believe both '73s were stock - autos w/3.55s - the 400 was the quickest 1/4 miler of the three  :scratchchin: but my '68 went thru the traps at 97mph  :icon_smile_big:

400sforever

heres my lynch road tag. . im not seeing any 9s in my top line there..did they change something in 74?

:2thumbs: the "415" is the PP833 4-spd and also indicates the shifter location (forward w/"dog-bone" or rear mounted like an E-body)

Where's yours?

400sforever

thanks! is there some place on the internet that spells out those codes?

some of the codes are in Galen's "white books" (he doesn't have any of the axles smaller than 8-3/4")
- the "415" transmission isn't there for example (he shows "416" & "417" for '74 & has none listed from '73)

the shop manual and/ Parts Catalogs might be of some help

Is your '74 Charger the Mr. Norm's Rallye that was on eBay a couple of years ago?  :2thumbs: 400 4-speed = SWEET!!

EccentricMagpies

Awesome !   thanks for that !

Seem to have the same rear in my 360 car.

I see i have a "416".  Must be opposite of 400s4ever

OK - so what's the difference in your two 4-speed transmissions "415" VS "416"??  360 VS. 400 should be the same, correct? NO, NO, NO!!

bench / buckets / console / CAR (Center Arm Rest) / none of the above - what have you got?

:icon_smile_blackeye: the transmission assembly part number  includes the bellhousing *** small-block VS. big-block WILL be different

EccentricMagpies

Mine has the buddy seat.  I do not think it has the orig seats though.  I think there was a mangled up 71 build sheet in one of them.

EccentricMagpies

Thank you for the information on that.

My other 360 car, silver one I show in user photo, has the short pistol grip shifter.  I actually recently swapped that out for the bench seat shifter about 2 weeks ago.  It's a non console car too.

the 360 4-speed car appears to have been buckets w/o console or CAR = "416" = 23-spline PP833 transmission, small-block bell-housing & rear mounted shifter w/short pistol grip (b & e-body)

can you guys confirm?

Yes.  The location is the same as my '74 silver - bucket seat - non console car which has the short shifter.

True in most cases. One of mine has a Job number instead (Lynch car).

My 360 4 speed with buddy seat uses the forward mounting pad and has a 418 on the tag. My 400 4 speed bucket car has a 415 on its tag.
