I have heard that California is very strict about releasing personal information, but I was wondering if anyone has been successful in a VIN history search within the state CA?  Some states supposedly destroy all records after 5-10yrs, which is hard to believe that they would not archeive it in some way.  I don't necessarily need past owner's personal info... I was just wondering if it is possibly to get ANY info?  I have seen a couple online title/VIN searches, which include CA, but I think most are similar to carfax which I think will not include antique cars. If anyone has been successful getting information out of CA, please let me know what route you took and what kind of information you were able to get. Thanks!

Not just CA, all states have strict privacy laws.  Your best shot is searching on the web, or if there is a registry for your year.

Hi Justin
CA DMV has a form inf70 that will give an owner history list. It is $5 to process. I don't know if it is any good or not because I have not turned it back in yet...

Here's the link to a fake DMV website.  It's FAKE.   It's not official, but maybe you can get something out of it.

In the past I have found it to be worthless.  Usually the response is "type in the complete VIN" even after you have typed in the complete VIN.  Maybe you'll get other/better results.  :shruggy:

Here's the official California DMV form.

I've never had any luck with the official method either.
