Seen any of the recent Star Trek movies?
The young guy who plays Chekov just got killed by his Jeep Cherokee.  It rolled into him in his driveway & pinned him between a brick pillar.

The actor also played young teenage Kyle Reese in the 4th Terminator flick (the one taking place in the future war, with Christian Bale, without Arnold).

Fiat/Chrysler has been recalling these Jeeps for the shifter failing be fully into park when the person thinks it is.

Is this an electronic issue?  All these modern trannys are electronically controlled.

happened to my friend in her charger....the good thing was the dealership did it.  They had it on a hill and they put it in park....he got out and it went into the ditch behind their dealership.....after some slight humming and hauling dealership agreed to pay for it and more.

It was due a fualty electronic shifting they have on modern cars is the story.....not just jeep is susceptible, but the whole lineup the jeep has the most stories though.

Some news outlets didn't report the entire story.

Driver error.  He left the Jeep running and it wasn't even in park!     Sad.
I've never owned anything but a MoPar. Can you say that?

Don't they teach people to set the parking brake anymore? I'd bet that the operator's manual says to do it.

Sadly barely anyone reads there owners manual. I can't tell you how many time a customer has came to the shop complaining about something that is noted clear as day in the owners manual. Then when you tell them they get all pissy, I've actually had a customer ask me if I really think they read that thing.

I believe the point of the recall is that they are difficult to get into park because of how the shifter works (or doesn't).  He could have reasonably thought it was in park and the shifter failed.

Parking brake could have helped.  After 14 years I have finally trained my wife to apply the parking brake every time.

Lots of modern cars have owners' manuals with more text than a King James Bible.  That doesn't help.

Whats odd is I find myself having to read the manual now just to drive and understand what these new cars are telling what going on. For example, reseting the service light....where's that owners manual...What's that light on the dash board telling me know, where that manual... :brickwall:

Those shifters are a pile of crap.

:yesnod:

my wife's '14 charger has that shifter and I absolutely hate it whenever i drive that car. I mess up all the time...if im backing out of a parking spot and try to put the car back in drive, half the time I actually have it in neutral.

It has no sensory feedback whatsoever. You basically have to look at either the shifter or the instrument panel to know what gear its in. I know, that sounds simple in theory, but its a lot more distracting in practice....

My 15' Challenger has the same shifter, but with the more traditional mechanism where you feel it "lock in" and it stays where you put it and its so much better.  I don't know what the deal is with this guy's GC...if its a '15, it is my understanding that all FCA cars of that yer already have the new shifter.

We're lucky we aren't driving these modern cars with mouse clicks.

I don't like it either. It is dangerous and you have to look at the dash to make sure it is in park. Chrysler sent us a recall notice a couple of weeks ago warning us about it. Said they would send out another recall when they figured out how to fix it. This is on a 2013 Chrysler 300.
