Gentlemen and Ladies,

Yesterday I attempted to drive my Charger (totally stock except 800cfm AVS) and only made it a block before it would run no further.   Symptoms include very low power and it seems to only fire on random cylinders and even backfired through the carb (unusual, I never see this).  When I checked the carb for sufficient fuel, the accelerator pump put out a good shot.  I looked for an electrical problem without seeing anything out of sort.  Then it started and appeared to run normally.  After securing the air cleaner and hood I proceeded down the hill and only made it 100ft before stalling out again, this time for good.  I had a friend tow me home and here I sit.  The engine cranks fine but will not run.  I began to suspect a broken timing chain, but observed the rotor move when I cranked the engine.  I did a continuity check on the ballast resistor and it seemed good.  Where should I start?  Engine timing?  Am I missing something basic?  It ran fine a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks for any assistance.

I would check the coil. Are you getting a good blue spark at the plugs? Totally stock means it still has points ignition,  would check those as well.

ErikH

I'll substitute a known good coil and check for spark at the points.

Changed out coil...it almost caught...checked spark at points...very weak.  I'll change out points/condenser next.

You also may need to throw in a fresh set of plugs now as well. Good chance they may be all fouled up once you get the ignition part sqared away.

Good luck and keep us posted on you progress.

As said above the plugs are most likely fouled!! Put in some NGK XR5's and you may need to do some carb adjusting as well. That 800 AVS may be calibrated too rich for a stock 440. Time for a good electronic ignition kit to bring your ignition system up to date!!

New points and condenser fixed the ignition issue.  I've decided to get a more-modern ignition system and convert to fuel injection.

Firecore ignition is what you need; you will NOT be disappointed...

I want to go with FITech fuel injection. Which Firecore is easiest to use with that, Ready to Run?  I plan to let the FITech do the ignition timing.

Thx,

Erik

Hi Eric,

The FITech injection controls the spark events so all you need is a descent quality distributor with a magnetic pickup.....the RTR has a built-in ECU which you won't need.  ;)

I've sold a few to the guys running those systems.  :yesnod:

If your car is totally stock I would replace the timing gear set now. The original cam gear has nylon teeth on it. Sooner or later the teeth get brittle and break. Then you are stranded. Happened on my 69 when I was a youngster... :Twocents:

x2 on the Firecore and Fitech EFI. Both affordable and quality products.  :2thumbs:

My suggestion on the FItech is to use the Tanks Inc. tank for an intank pump setup. Their Fuel Command Center has had alot of issues.
