I'm in Ct. I like it here. As I get older I have less tolerance for winter. Each snow storm people drive like it is the first time they have ever driven in snow!
The taxes are 2nd highest in the country. Gas prices and gas tax is one of the highest. Our state income tax that was temporary and was going to be phased out is here to stay and is steadily rising. We pay property taxes every year on cars, boats, motorcycles, etc. They tax our Social Security and Pensions. I am tired of paying taxes on everything!
I'd like to find a state that doesn't tax my pension. Id hate to lose 20 -25% of my pension to taxes.

I grew up in Waterbury, CT. during the 50's & 60's, which pretty much was considered the arm pit of the state (well in my opinion anyway) back then.
Left in 1973 and joined the Air Force.
They put me in Texas, Germany, and California.
After discharge, i pretty much could have gone anywhere i wanted, to settle down.
I certainly wasn't going back to Waterbury, after doing 7 years in the AF.
By then i was used to Mather AFB, and the Sacramento area, and liked it here, so i stayed.
40 years now, and it's worked out well.
Fortunate for me that i did, as now that I'm in my 60's health issues have reared their ugly head, and medical facilities, (doctors) do play an important role in where you live in old age.
The VA at Mather has been taking good care of me, and they farmed me out to the UC Davis Medical Center for one "issue" of mine that they took care of.
Without being around the UC Davis Hospital. i probably would have been up shits creek without a paddle.
And the doctors at UCD have the best of reputations out there in the medical world.
Couldn't afford to pay those personal, and property taxes, back in the New England states, and probably California ain't much better, but I'm staying put, until i croak, then they can plant me in the veterans cemetary, not far down the road from me.

On an unrelated note, those Phantoms were awesome. Do I assume correctly that you flew them?

It was.
I liked maintaining the Phantom's.
With training, the Air Force gives you lot's of responsibility, for a guy that was in his 20's, back in
my enlistment days.

Started thinking about the panhandle in Florida - depends if we can get hurricane insurance.  ;)  California has grown quite thin to me...we have friends in the Pensacola area, and can get a good home near the water. No state income tax. Can be (is) hot and humid. Working on my cars in my temperature controlled garage, with fishing a minute or so away sounds appealing. Wife would go in a minute. Been thinking about it....  :scratchchin:

Not planning to move. Stick me with a fork, I am done.

Good heavens, I was raised here in Ohio. Would love to be back in Texas but I could easily live in Tennessee.

Enjoy your 120+ degree Summers. If you are going to move there, why not consider a location up north?

PA is not bad if you like hunting, shooting, cars, archery....just saying. We need more good people in the state to counteract "beautiful" Philadelphia vote.

And you are always close to Carlisle!

SIX FEET UNDER (give or take)  I hear it is more like 3 feet deep.  :shruggy:

Assuming that I can retire.

No.  I moved to Nevada 20 years ago and like it here.  Not perfect but I like it.  Got away from the California taxes, family and friends here.

Retirement.....that's a nice concept.

Hard to say where I'll go if and when that happens. New Hampshire isn't too bad from the taxation stand point (for now), no state income or sales tax yet. Property taxes are on the high side (motor vehicles included, unless everything you drive is old). That may change with the Massholes who keep moving here and bringing the liberal tax & spend mentality with them.

Weather is another story....my tolerance for winter has decreased with each passing year, and NH can suck from Dec.-March. Might end up as a snowbird, if I can afford it.

Yes, I will be leaving the city, and I may not wait until retirement. Sick of it.

I returned to Fl After retiring from the AF in Anchorage AK...best decision I've made in a LOOONG time
- inexpensive house W/pool and 3 car garage o 3/4 acre less than $150K
- Taxes within limits
- ample medical care
- I learned I like it hot!
