What do they do with cars that they just cant sell? Let's say an 05 model has been sitting there for over a year and no one buys it but more space needs to be made for newer models. What happens to the unsold cars? Do they get sent to 'used' car lots? Donated to charity? Dumped into the ocean?

I thought they just discounted the crap out of them until they did sell. New Superbirds were on lots until 1972 & 1973 in some cases. The Dodge Ram I got last summer (2005) was a brand new 2004 leftover. I was surprised it was still there, but the sticker price was discounted over $13,000 & made it cheaper than a used truck by thousands.

By the way, I don't work for a dealer, but I once stayed at a Holiday Inn. :D

I know the longer it sits on the lot the more they pay in taxes on the value if it sits longer than a year. And from what I understand they sell them to a wholesaler and they get sold at auctions. But that could just be for returned leased cars and trade ins.

I Work for a Dodge dealership  as a tech,  we have a 05 SRT 10  that we just cant sell, Also some magnums that are last years. They will sit on the lot until they do sell, even if it is two or three years. Some dodges are slow movers, we also have two charger daytonas that have sat for two months. I bet when we get the challenger we cant keep them. :icon_smile_cool:  JR.

I work at a dealership in the parts department.  The answer I got when I asked was dealer traded to bigger car lots that has more traffic then us for one, and of course they buy just the faster moving vehicles in larger numbers too and the less desirable models in fewer numbers.
Most of the people working there have been there for around 15 to 25 years.   So I guess experience will count for smarter buying somewhat.

We've had new cars that had a birthday while sitting on the lot.   They'll usually offer the salesman an extra incentive to get them off the lot.

I bought a 2005 Ram Daytona about a month ago. It had been sitting there for a while. I got it for about $10,000 off the sticker price.

I recently bought a 2005 Ram pickup that was a carryover from a dealer. I paid less for this new 05 than what the used 03's and 04's are going for. It's a quad cab, 4x4, with the 5.7 Hemi and it is still new. Got a deal I could not pass up. It's not an 06 but it is still new and I love it.
