Running to O'reillys every time I need to check a code is getting old. Time to buy a code reader. Any suggestions? What works the best for a home DIY guy?

I use the Equus 3020.  It really depends on what you need out of your reader.  Mine just reads and resets codes, some of the fancier Equus models can tell you more detailed information about what's going on.  I wish I could afford one of those Genesys scanners that the shops and dealers use; you have complete control of the PCM and all electronics but they cost thousands...

I have an  Actron Pocket scan. Sounds about like what Myk has. I think it was like $30 and it reads /resets codes. Has definitely come in handy.

I've got a $200 Actron...  a $50 something and a ebay $15 cheapo.   They all work.

Only thing I bought the actron for was transmission / abs codes.

I have an App on my phone and a bluetooth OBDII port adapter. Works great and a back up scanner for ABS.

I found a Snap-On MT2500 scanner kit for $150.....reads codes, displays data, and has bi-lateral functions for the ECM and BCM

I think it only make sense to get one that can not only read and clear the codes, but do things like energize relays, and display input values. Do those even exist?

Yes, check out the more upscale Equus models.  Also units like what Bryan mentioned probably can manipulate some systems.  Keep in mind that these things cost hundreds new, though...

Same here on the actron. Mine is a matco but is exactly like the actron obd 2 and abs code reader I have seen on the net for sale. I bought it for reading ABS codes and it has been a good one so far. Since mine says matco instead of actron on it i'm pretty sure I gave about 300 bucks for it...

When I was at Oriellys they were using a Bosch code reader. Bosch is the brand they sell now. They range from under a $100 to a few hundred.

I have the high end BOSCH unit and love it. Being able to monitor a sensor real time as you drive is great for finding problems.
JUNKTRAVELER: all I've seen in this thread is a bunch of bullies and 3 guys that actually give a crap.
