What is the big deal with FJ-40 Toyotas?

I keep seeing rave reviews of FJ40 Landcruiser? I had one in the 70's, the carburetor and distributor were finicky over-complicated junk on my 1970 model.  :eek2: Thankfully a company in Cal. adapted a GM dizzy and Rochester carb. that really helped. Yea they have a funky charm but my CJ-3A could run rings around one! The FJ40 was horrible to live with as a daily driver, the heat did little if it was cold and the ride was well let's just say a teeth jarring shake you to bits ride. (Even on a smooth highway.) Parts were insanely costly if you could even find them so I just do not understand why now anyone would pay 50K plus for one now?
While I never hated mine I just got sick of how useless it was the longer I lived with it. Now it's a "Gold Standard" for 4X4's?  My CJ-3A was stolen and to this day I miss it...the FJ40 I just think back and shudder!  :eek2:

Yeah they definitely have a following- When I was a kid my dad had a 67 bronco and his buddy an FJ.  I will say that thing could climb and take a beating.

The Bronco was a climber too- both rattled your teeth out.  We also had (still have) a 1944 Ford GPW. That would out-do both of the larger rigs- But it just couldn't do anything over like 35MPH.

The thing I remember about the Bronco when we were older and driving it as kids is the stupid vacuum operated wipers. Not a great idea in colorado snow...always driving with one hand out the widow wiping the snow off.

I think for all those rigs it's all about nostalgia these days... I'd take an FJ.   :icon_smile_big:

overpriced, but awesome cars...its like the charger version of the import world in a sense.  The FJ40 has lots of history and done great things if you were into reading you will see.

myk

I'm sure there are people saying the same things about our cars lol...

I owned a 71-72? FJ40 when I was in the Navy and still love that vehicle.... I drove it coast-to-coast twice, spent many Sundays running it through the South Carolina swamps with the local 4WD club (when I could afford it on a sailor's pay), and it never let me down. Rock-tough and reliable. Only problem was the damm double-leading-shoe front drum brakes. A PAIN to keep adjusted, and downright scary when they werent !! They fixed that with F Discs.

Prices have skyrocketed....probably more out of nostalgia, but they are damm fine reliable and capable 4WD's. I wish I had another one, but Id rather put that money into another Mopar muscle car..... or a Jeep FC170, another interesting 4WD that you dont see anymore.

PS.... I sold it back home in California in the late 70's for more than I paid for it, and it still lives on, now with a Chevy V8 and numerous other upgrades... including F Disc brakes !!

AH another SBC V8 convert.....that makes it a "TOYLET".  Toyota bought the rights to the "Blue Flame" 6cyl from GM and converted it to metric. This allows the V8 conversion and the parts swap done by me in the 70's.
Still no mention of any having automatic or A/C I've ever seen. (There isn't room for ether.)
