8.75 Differential questions

Question1: Is this Auburn unit gone?
Question2: Can a worn sure-grip cause howling at high speed? (acceleration/deceleration)
Question3: Do people recommend the clutch type over the cone type? Anybody have a name and place of THE unit to buy for a street driven car?

I can only answer question 3.  Detroit truetrac.  Far superior in every way.

1) Yes, when the cones wear enough to contact the bottom of the tapered bore it's worn out but can be salvaged.

2) Not likely.

3) Everybody has an opinion.

I read that thread. I still don't really understand what happened. It seems like it's more of an issue for 8 3/4" axles? Is it an actual mechanical issue or is just really noisy? Regardless of what type you get, I'd get it from Dr. Diff.

I have at least 20,000 miles on my TrueTrac, with no problems 440 4-Speed. It's in a Dana 60 I got from Dr. Diff

The ones that are in the Dana 60 don't seem to be giving trouble, from what I hear.   Its the ones for 8.75 that have issues.

mine has the bump bump rattle noise when slowing down, I had the green axle bearings, grabbed the wheel & it was loose, while replacing bearings with the tapered bearings i pulled the chunk to install the axle spacer & the side gears move all over in the case, still makes the bump & rattle noise with factory type axle bearings.

what a big pile of junk.

I know mine is noisy, maybe tomorrow I'll meander out to the garage and jack the rear up and check it out.

pros of Clutch...

easy and cheap to rebuilt even at home. Rebuilt kits are around....

the thrust block system is weak and a headache everytime you have to dissasembly ( for whatever reason )

of course, Cone kind are right the opposite

People who complain about having to adjust the axle end play are just plain lazy but it sells a lot of Green bearings.

  Really hard to spin that adjuster and lock it with the dog.
