Forged or Cast Crank?

1st gear went out on my transmission so I pulled it to get it rebuilt. I don't know much about the history of the this engine and transmission. I can't find out anything from the previous owner even thought he put it together  ::) I was told its a forged crank 440. It's not the original motor. The balancer makes me think it's a forged crank (according to 440source) but the weights on the torque converter makes me thing cast. Can anyone help me out?

Only way to know for sure is to pull the oil pan and take a look at the crank itself. IIRC a forged crank will look just like that, a forging. While a cast crank will have a clean appearance with not a lot of roughness.

Edit: the balancer is for a forged crank.

the weights on the converter look like to balance the converter, not the engine. my internal balance converter has one weight on it.

I considered that, but I think the other weight might have come off recently.

the harmonic balancer is for an internal balance from what i can see, when you get the trans rebuilt you will need to get your converter rebuilt or get a new one.

The first pic is deceptive, you need to turn the crank 180° and see what the other side looks like. The external weight offset might be out of view. Some forged cranks need external balancing.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

The front face is under cut, so I don't think that it is weighted.  I think only the flush face, like in your pic is weighted for external balance.

The motor isn't original but my gut tells me it's a forged crank and the converter was the wrong one.

Another thought on the converter... I talked to the transmission builder and told him my concern with the converter. He likes to see the old converter so he knows what kind to get. I told him I don't believe its the right one for it. He asked if it vibrated bad and I said no, but I have less than 50 miles on it and I never got a chance to really get on it. I think if it had both weights on it, I would have noticed it right away. A single weight might have moved the vibration higher up in the RPMs. That is my theory.

You would think it would be a easy to find a transmission guy to rebuild my Torqueflite. I called a couple placed but they gave the run around. They couldn't answer simple questions like what they include in their rebuilds? Do you offer performance upgrades? I finally went with a guy a local jeep buddy highly recommended but I'm still weary. If it wasn't for his recommendation and the badass tranny they built for him, I would have walked out. Customer service is a lost art.

If you lived near Phx, I'd build it for you. I can do them in my sleep. Did my first one successfully when I was 14
