I think I may have my fan on backwards...     anyone have a pic of how it is suppost to be mounted...   mine is a HD direct drive unit from a 60's Dodge dumptruck with a 383 so....           all i need to know is if this is correctly mounted...     i'm at my witts end with this cooling problem

I think It mounts to the silver thing on the left  ;D
It looks the same as on my car. The inside of the blats has that narrow mounting strip and the outside of the blades towards the radiator just has the two rivets

Your fan looks like it is on correct to me, as long as you fan is turning towards the drivers side while running.  I have forgotten which way it turns.

The fan is correct, what temp thermostat did you put in?

Though most fans are designed to mount with a specific side forward, this is for quiet operation (yours is correct by the way) and it is a misconception that a fan can push rather than pull air if it is mounted backwards. The blade pitch and direction of rotation don't change no matter which way the fan is installed.

If you are having overheating problems, I would get rid of the big diameter pulleys on the water pump, and go with the smaller diameter one.

Rolling Thunder, I hope you put a spacer on that fan to get it closer to the radiator. Oh, and put a shroud on there so you create negative air pressure,to pull the air through the radiator at a stop light. I'll bet if you took the fan off altogether you would not see a difference with it mounted that way. Get that fan closer and you will see a difference. Mine is so close from the factory that I can not even get a fan belt between it and the radiator.
If it ain't wide open; it ain't running.        Rule number one in motocross racing: Pin it; row the gear box; and wait until you hit something.     At work my motto is: If you need me, call someone else.

I agree if it is to far away it won't draw enough air thru the rad it just comes around it a shroud will make a lot of dif.

alright guys - thanks for all the help...      Just let it idle for 30 minutes and it never got over 180* ---  what was the problem you ask ?  TWO faulty temp senders....    (remember i had swapped in a different one yesterday)   so today on a hunch....   swapped it with one i had laying around and presto...   180*....      and i now know bith gauges work correctly....    because they bolth read 180*....       The fan is really close - however it is closer on the bottom...    has about 1/2" clearance off the radiator....       Chris...   i Am positive that the "dizzy" (cool nickname BTW) is alright...   its @ 10* initial...   i think i just put the spark plug wires on the wrong towers...        but thanks alot guys - all the suggestions helped and thanks for your time...

The fan is really close - however it is closer on the bottom...    has about 1/2" clearance off the radiator....

It'd be nicer to see a good 3/4" or maybe more to the rad.    If you can find a shorter fan spacer at the local autozone type store do it.    Things move around sometimes during sudden acceleration and deceleration.

Otherwise for the dizzy...  looks like somebody put the gear in a few teeth off.   I try to put the dizzy slot in so it's parallel to the camshaft.

Did any one notice how dirty Dans head light can is. If it were mine I would pull that and throw a new coat of paint on it.....

Put a thermastatic fan clutch on that thing. Things move around while an engine is running. You can take out a water pump bearing with that solid spacer.

Thats what I was thinking.....the vac can should point to the drivers side VC area, not to the radiator
