Installing water pump housing....

I've done a search but couldn't find anything --sorry if this is a repeated question..

What's the best way to install a water pump housing? It's a new aluminum one if that makes a difference.

I've seen some install with gaskets and aircraft sealant. But when I popped my stock housing off it looks like there was (if anything) just some silicone around the flow holes, and no gasket.

Any help greatly appreciated.

I put some sealer on the gasket and mount.

Felpro.. aviation gasket sealer lightly on both sides and it'll be good until your great grand kid gets the car!

Awesome. Thanks for the responses. So, stock, was there no gasket.. or was mine probably just gone due to age...?

Just having a little fun at your expense. I assume that this is a big block, and probably 40 years old?

Do you think:

1) That the OEM used RTV back then. and
2) that nobody has taken the water pump off in 40 years?

I guess the second one might be possible.

Water pump to block is where I use the fel pro gasket and no sealer.

Have you read the sticky on cooling problems and some aluminum housings?

Come to think of it, on some cars the procedure specifically says to not use sealer, just the gaskets...

Slap in a Milodon High Flow Water pump and your car will thank you!   Make sure you don't have an old 440Source water pump housing.....  :Twocents:   A bunch of us learned the hard way....

Is there a picture of the impeller somewhere?

I did actually go through that whole thread and another one comparing housings. I actually couldn't remember what I bought off ebay, but went to the garage and checked and it's the PRW stuff. The housing is cavernous and looks like flow will not be a problem. While the pump isn't the Milidon high flow one, it's PRW as well, I'm going to give it a shot.

Ha, yeah, I think number 2) for sure... certainly for the housing to block. I looked at the housing again and it seems as if there was/is a gasket there... but, you know, 45 y/o :)
