Has anyone ever built or heard of a company or built a full tube chassis for a 2nd gen charger? I'm in the process of restoring a 68' rear half rusted and considering options.
Thanks.. Mark

Some stuff exists.  But it's not really a route to cheapen the project.  Replacement tube frames generally happen because somebody wants to adapt a bunch of expensive/aftermarket chassis stuff.

Several thousand dollars buys a lot of top-grade replacement sheetmetal these days.  It's not a fun job but it's typical for old Mopars now.

But if I may offer a bit of advice - I don't know your experience level with this stuff.  When you replace this much of the car, the sheetmetal/body work is past the realm of cosmetic repairs.  Make sure your body guy can do structural work.  If you ask if his welds are "good" that shouldn't mean they look factory or are easily hidden.  It means they don't come apart when some dumbass rear-ends the car at full speed and the panels are all getting twisted & bent.  Your body guy's idea of "straight panels" should be panels that add up to a symmetrical car shape, not just pretty body lines on the exterior.  Etc.

A lot of this stuff isn't so critical when a car just needs quarter skins & trunk pans.  Lots of amateur restoration work on moderately rusty cars would not be adequate for a major reconstruction.

Check out the Art Morrison website. They are the premier chassis builders and will build anything you want. They have all kinds of info including spec sheets for ordering a chassis for practically any car. The current catalog features a Superbird build on the front few pages. If your back half is gone, it sounds like a good time to replace it with an AM back half!

Going tube chassis won't necessarily be easier and certainly won't be cheaper than a stock restoration with metal replacement and will impact perceived value.

Thanks guys. I know of a shop in Fife,Washington AM or Alston. I'm looking into both modified and stock set up. I don't care about my cars originality.

Isn't there a 68' charger registry also so I can look up everything about the car I just got?

Just a thought, thinking of tail lite mods for one. two set's of 68' tail lites or mid 60's vet tail lites with reverse lites on inside vs in between red lense. Also thought of 68' mustang shelby t/l's. Yes,this charger will be heavily modified when completed.

?? IMO, mid 60s Vette tail lights look similar to '68 Charger lights and '68 Shelby tail lights look like a generic version of '69 Charger tail lights. If your going to change it up, make it something totally unique, like a '68 Cougar.

Ok, just don't show up in the delusional thread in a couple of years asking crazy money for a one-off.   :pity:

Lennard

With the taillight mods described above he will have a hard time selling it anyway.

dads_69

Guys,I'm just building a car,not a piano. Keep your negative comments to yourself please.

If you post things on the world wide web / public forum, you can expect  comments,  positive and negative. If you can't handle that then you shouldn't post it on the world wide web. Not everyone is going to say oh and ah and awesome.

dads_69

Yep but your just making yourself look like an asshole posting your bullshit dude. Get a life. I'm a mopar guy at heart building a 68' charger, again. Go away.

With Corvette or Mustang taillights.  :eek2:
Ps, cussing on the internet doesn't make you a tough guy. ;)

dads_69

Mods, please delete this thread, the idiots just don't know when to to STFU.
I asked questions about mods and etc, then you responded with negative comments and are a straight up jackass.

 Someone's a bit touchy .....wrong time of the month??? :icon_smile_wink: IMO just because someone has a different view point to yours or disagrees with you, that does not necessarily make them an asshole.....although of course he might be.....I don't know him personally :icon_smile_big:....but because I don't know him how close he lives or whether he has a gun!!) I probably would not call him names on a public forum! If you think this is a abuse you wanna try it over on the jeepforum....Id give you about five minutes on there.

Anyway. Good luck with your build.......IMO just try not to change that classic body shape/line too much with your mods and you probably wont go too far wrong. And yes its up to you what lights you fit....after all you are building it for yourself I assume. Just don't expect it to be worth the same as a more stock looking one. Have a nice day.
If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you !!

dads_69

Damn, I'm shocked at how many guys are such idiots on line here with negative comments vs being car guys with helpfulness. Y'all are so stuck on building a charger to either a Duke car or exact clone of whatever has been built before and copy such. Vs a like wow, that's flipping cool car! sad how so many of you are close minded.
Hey, you can hate the game but don't hate the player.

Plenty of people bash General Lees too.

These cars bring out strong opinions from everyone.  People who aren't even Mopar fans will see one in public and start talking about how it "should have been done".  68-70 Chargers are like that.  You gotta get used to it.
