Hi guys,
Dropped in my fresh 440 about a month ago now, got all the electrical, cooling, linkages etc. coming along. I have been going back and forth on the issue of cooling fans. I have decided that I want mechanical rather than electric for the practicality of efficient cooling with no wiring and for a more stock look. I have had great success with a mechanical flex fan on another project (camaro, 383 stroker, hot cam etc. it works really good). So I'm between using a similar set up on the 440, or going with a more traditional thermo clutch fan. I've found some sources that use a non-thermal clutch for the fan. Meaning that it's always engaged. In that case, why use a clutch at all? That brings up my real question... can I use a mechanical fan (fixed blade stock type) without a clutch at all? I have a stock steel factory fan with a bad clutch on it. If I remove the clutch, could I use it as a fixed blade mechanical fan? I totally understand that this is not good for HP or gas mileage, but it would cool very well if my thinking is correct. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks very much.

If I understand the question correctly, I would say you could use the fan from the thermal clutch assembly, except that the bolt pattern on the clutch fan is different from the bolt pattern on the water pump. You would have to make some kind of very precise adapter to mount the fan to the water pump. Get it out-of-round and you would have underhood shrapnel. Better, I think, to get a ready to mount fan.
