Hi there Mopar gents, I'm building a 440 that's bored .030" over and looking to put the COMP Cams 21-228-4 cam in it (Advertised Duration 285/297, Lift .545/.545) and going to be putting an A-833 four speed behind it. I believe the rear end is stock with a 3.23 ratio. My question is what size flywheel should I use for this setup?

Thank you,

Phil

It depends on what bell housing you have, aluminum or cast iron. Standard 440 with a cast iron bell is 11".

Did this engine have a manual trans behind it originally? Several more things you have to look out for that can give some problems, most manual trans engines came with a forged crank "internally balanced" with the with the pilot bushing hole reamed to proper size, all 440's at least till around 1972ish were forged and alot of the cars with forged cranks and automatic trans had the pilot hole drilled but weren't final reamed to sized and after 1972ish they were either forged or cast cranks depending on trans option but most passenger cars were cast cranks that were "externally balanced" after that year and they didn't have a pilot hole for a manual trans, there are ways to deal with these issues but need to know that you have first of all.

Welcome to the board, Phil.

Besides the issues mentioned above, if the engine and the bellhousing weren't mated at the factory, you need to dial the bellhousing (check that it's centered on the crankshaft centerline).

Since any original 440/4-speed would have had a Dana 60 rear end, I guess it's safe to assume that you're piecing the car together, so the correct bellhousing/flywheel would depend on the year....'66-'69 would have come with an iron bellhousing and a 143-tooth flywheel while the '70-later had an aluminum bellhousing with a 130-tooth flywheel.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.
