Need help with transmission selection

My blown 408 stroker is near complete.  I started looking into building up a 46rh to handle the kind of power I will be producing and my parts list alone is up to $4k.  That does not include the transmission itself.  Looking at these prices, it seems I can do something much more modern and better.  Is there any transmission I can put in which doesn't require hacking up the entire tranny tunnel?  I don't mind putting some holes in it or even going to full manual.  I just don't want to have to rip the whole tunnel out as my interior and dash are already in place.

I have a L460E from Silver Sport Transmissions. Not many miles on it, but love the overdrive and how it works with tuning. Only have to bend over the pinchweld at firewall to tunnel. Kit was complete and fit well.

I looked into the 4L80e because it can withstand some respectable power but it for sure doesn't fit in our tunnels. I'm not sure the 4L60e would survive even if built. What kind of power are you running?

727specialist.com  I always thought this looked like a decent deal  *Super Duty 727 with Gear Vendors Od unit installed 3600.00.  HD 727 without GV $900

But I've no experience with this builder. I'm sure someone here does.  :shruggy:

It really did fit exactly as they advertise it, check out their web site or google the old Hot Rod Kiesler install article, same thing. I am at 427 hp rear wheel but do not as yet have enough miles to attest to longitivity. I have the stage 3 version advertised for 650 torque. It was one of the few parts of the build that didn't fight me, and their techs are awesome when you have questions.

I also have the 4L60e from silver sport transmissions in my 572 hemi.  Perfect fit, clear instructions.  Silver sport transmissions is a real pleasure to work with.  Shifts great.  FAR superior modern technology to a 727 Torqueflight.  Requires two small dimples in the tunnel with a hammer, template included.  May require a flexible dipstick.  That was the only part of mine which wasn't plug and play, but that was because I have very little room between the firewall and cylinder head.  650 torque rating behind a 700 torque motor.  So far, no problems.

Silver Sport Transmissions used to be Keisler (?)  Bought by a customer who liked the Keisler product but was dissatisfied with their customer service.  I believe he was a successful retired businessman who really revamped the whole place.  4L60E's are a GM product, so of course the main problem is the bell housing won't fit.  Their kit fixes that.

So I take it these 4L60E's are built up inside?  I've had three go out on me with otherwise stock F bodies that we're not abused in any way; I do not have a good relationship with the 4L60E.  Many F body/GM guys went to the 4L80E instead...

Exactly.  The 4L80e is a great transmission.  I wish they would fit in B bodies better.

I talked to the guys at silver sport and the response I got about the 4L60e living behind my application was "eeeeeehhhh, it should hold up."  Not comfortable with that response.

Just want to throw this out there; you can cut the tunnel without having to remove the dash. The front seats, console, and carpet need to come out but that's not exactly a lot of work.

Check Keepat's Modern Bullitt thread for a very straightforward way to install a T-56 or the newer TR6060 6 speed manual. If you can fit those then you can fit pretty much anything. With that amount of torque I'd say go for the strongest trans you can find.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

Just looked at Keepat's build.  There is no way that he could have welded the front of the tunnel back together if he had the dash in.  He cut right up to the firewall.

True but you don't have to go that far. Look up Moparstuarts thread, he stuck a T56 in his Superbird without taking the dash out.

LOL.  Pass.  The 4L60E is such a joke in the F body community it's the first thing that gets tossed when someone starts making serious power...
