How do I find out which flexplate I need?

My flexplate is slightly bent so I need another one. The 727 is on a cart. I don't know what car the trans came out of or what size the converter is. The engine is a '71 440. I still have the old flexplate but for the life of me can't remember where it is.

Mancini lists for plates, two 10" and two 11". I don't know which of these work for my car.

How can I find out?

The 440 didn't get the small converter until '74 or so. If all the '71 components are original you have a 12" converter which uses the 11" bolt pattern.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Well I guess it was time to check the numbers.

PK3681864 so it looks like it's a 74-75 400 trans.

I found the flexplate and it measures 10" hole to hole.

So it looks like I need #4058429 as it has one of the bolt holes offset like mine.

I'm not going to change this trans, I'll be installing a T-56 once I'm back to work. But just out of curiosity, is this converter holding me back a whole lot or does it not matter? Cruiser by the way, no racing involved.

I would run a solid sfi plate, just for peice of mind, even on a cruiser. They are only 100 bucks. Converter is holding nothing back on a cruiser. Tighter the better in that kind of app.

Dino

I thought about the SFI plate and even though I am on a very tight budget due to circumstances beyond my control, it would not be enough reason not to get one. However, painful as this is, I will be unable to finish the car or come even close to it before I start graduate school this May. Once I'm in the program all work on the car will stop. At best I may be able to tinker with it here and there but we're talking a few hours over the course of several months if I'm really lucky.

At this point I'm hoping to get the drive train back in the car before May so at least the bulk of the car is back in one piece. That would be the most I could ask for.

The reason I'm going with the regular flex plate is because the first big mod I will do to this car once I'm back at work is to install a 6 speed, so the 727 will see very little road time.
