Technically a 10" wheel measures to the outside edges of the rims 11"

So when a 10" wheel quotes a 5" BS would that actually measure 5.5" ?

no, it is to the measured to the outside lip.

This is what I thought otherwise the BS measurement wouldn't be of much help

So non a 10" wheel with 5" BS the front of the wheel would be 6" to the outer edge

tan top

distance between A & B , is back space

second picture !
an example  , a  8 inch wide wheel , !  will  have  the measurement  8 inches  across the rim  ,  line C  &  the overall  width would be roughly 9inches  line D , wheel  rim width is always measured at  C

... and if you are pushing the limits, don't forget to account for sidewall tire bulge. The Tirerack website has good accessible info on mounted tire section width.

Check with the rim or wheel manufacturer...some measure from inside the rim lip ..some show measurements from the outside of the rim lip...1/2 can be a big deal.

this always confused me  ::) Mine is funny that backspacing is equal to the same distance on my lips on my rims. 10inch rim wide with 5.5inch backspacing.....zero offset.  My tires are 11.8inches so it covers it a tad.

Plus you have offset numbers, which further confuse people.
