The son of the creator of Barney the purple dinosaur is facing prison for shooting his neighbour.

Patrick Kearns Leach, whose mother Sheryl created the popular children's show "Barney & Friends," pleaded no contest Tuesday to shooting his neighbor in a fit of rage in 2013.

The 29-year-old Leach is expected to be sentenced to 15 years in prison after shooting a 49-year-old man with a .45 caliber handgun in the chest and leaving him to bleed in his Malibu driveway, the Los Angeles Times reported.

After hearing the gunshot, the New York Daily News writes, a good Samaritan wrote down the license plate of the fleeing vehicle and then helped save the unidentified victim on the morning of January 9, 2013.

Leach drove next door, honked his horn and accused his neighbor of trespassing, which escalated and led to him firing multiple times, according to prosecutors.

"I heard the victim yelling, 'Hey, I've been shot!'" the anonymous good Samaritan told ABC News in 2013.

The neighbour was shot once in the chest and the round exited through his shoulder, NYDN reports.
