A quick question about starters...

So, I'm getting really close to being able to fire up my Charger after 8 years.  I'm getting ready to put a new/remained starter on my rebuilt 440.  I noticed that, like my old one, one of the starter mount holes is much bigger than the stud/nut that goes through it.

Is there suppose to be a bushing put in there or is it just suppose to have that slack on one side? (having the slack seems wrong to me, I would think you'd want a nice snug fit...)

My experience with old Mopar starters is that there were no bushings for the upper hole(stud). Yes I would think that an oversize hole would not be practical. You may want to wait until some other members weigh in.

Good luck.

No bushing needed, the oversized hole is probably to allow for production tolerances.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

I had that same question years ago and kinda worked it out in my mind this way.

That hole is not a "locating" fit. (the starter is "located" by the bore fit of the nose of the starter in the bell housing). The bolt hole is needed/used for clamping/holding. (even the other hole need not to be as close to bolt size as it is.) :shruggy:)
As John pointed out (and I agree) it was likely a decision made in engineering to make assembly easier.--I also am glad it is like it is because of the many times I have changed starters over the years :eek2: I have done it in the dark, (by feel) in the rain, on the side of the road, etc. :Twocents:

Good to know, thanks guys.

One less thing to worry about.  I'll get it installed today.
