Saw this car on FB and although it is Beautiful I have never heard of this seller's claim that the trunk would come from factory in Splatter Paint.

I was trying to be nice so I brought the question here, now the owner is saying I'm a "hater" for not blindly following the nonsense he is spewing.  You can repeat a story a million times and even raise your voice but guess what still doesn't make it true.

I love the car but am so tired of people that have to live through their car's.

Chrysler didn't spray a porous paint onto trunk floors in 1970, nor do they install whatever that contraption is in the trunk. If you don't have documentation to support things don't try to make the world believe.

I agree that the gizmo could be related to anti corrosion. :shruggy: The other item looks like it could be a zinc block that might be intended as a "sacrificial anode"-- that is common on boats to be (in effect) the first place for corrosion to happen there by saving the rest of the boat from the issue of corrosion until the zinc is gone

What this topic brings to mind is many other devices we have been subjected to --and pitched--- to buy that will do wonders for us beyond rational explanation

I don't have it with me as it's at the shop but I was going thru the 70 Charger FSM and I noticed there was a listing for gray / black splatter paint.   It was in the body section near the back.

I've never actually seen a car with it from the factory but to have it listed in the FSM probably means it was available somehow.

Edit:   Found this in an online 69 FSM regarding splatter paint listing.

Not a chance that spatter (what GM called it) paint is original to that car. Trunks were always body color.

Agreed from 67-72, and it was available over the counter at Chrysler dealers also in Mopar labeled spray cans, my 1969 Chrysler 300 that I purchased off the original owner with 60K miles, untouched, had a gray/black splattered trunk, as to whether the factory or dealer did it, I don't know

Thanks Chris for punting it over.

Where does one start with this....

Car was already in 70 Charger registry as it was on ebay a few years ago up for sale from the Munday Auto Collection. The details on this car are not entirely accurate. See the Auto Collection site below it says the car has power locks.
http://www.mundayautocollection.com/?/site/collection/1970_dodge_charger/

The fender tag appears fully legit so as a 999 car it is rare. Although I have 7 other 999 cars registered. It has the correct Y39 Special Order code as well.

The notion of it being the "Every Box Checked" car is not accurate as there were several options available that were not selected. Moreover there are more than a few cars registered with more options.

The bumblebee stripe is incorrect as the car came with white longitudinal stripes which suggests the original colour was a darker one....many 999 cars were the A4 Silver...white stripes on silver does not work. Was the special paint in fact the Burgandy...who knows....unless you can document the ownership to day 1 and confirm it or if it is actually on invoice / sales paperwork. Maybe I'm jaded by advertising tricks but the sales ad says the car was "repainted a beautiful burgundy color"....that does not specifically state the original factory colour was burgundy.

The belief that 999 70 Chargers were built in Detroit is nonsense. I have not seen the splatter paint before in a 70 Charger and do not understand why this would be unique to 999 cars only.

And then there is that thing in the trunk....that is not something that came from the factory. I looked at it closely and believe it says AUTO-MATIC PRODUCTS CHICAGO. I did a google search and found some old boating material from mid-60s that references a company called AUTO-MATIC PRODUCTS CO. based in Chicago that offered electric bilge pumps, bilge exhaust blowers and electric ventilators.

All that said....it is a real 999 car....and that is pretty cool.

RJS

Don I glad this made it to you, Chris said he was sending you a link. This all started because of the nonsense on FB with people telling him it's a 100K car it's a 150K car it's a 200K car, bring it to B.J. and you'll get so much money etc...  I stated everytime it was was a beautiful car but so many of the statements are just speculation. Tried to get the guy to understand unless he has factory paperwork it is just a story he was told by the seller.
He stated he had proof, I asked for him to post it so I could learn something new, then he stated that he did research and found a code for it. I asked for him to produce the code for it. Then when he couldn't do either of the above I was a "Hater" and he wanted to see the "Couch" I was riding.

Been in this hobby long enough to recognize HYPE, I wanted him to realize no matter how many times he states these incorrect facts that doesn't make them true.

In the end he took his ball home and now we all can't play with it (took the post down).

It's a rare car that is worth money, but you need to have facts and a proper Restoration to maximize the package.

"if" that car was worth $XXX then Frank's (member here: Spike) 999 RT/SE Silver car is worth same or more since as I recall the silver was known as the original factory special order paint. He has a great car and the V21 option sets off the silver so well. :drool5:

It's interesting that it was used on the larger cars, but not B & E bodies. I learned something new today. :)

Regarding the Charger in this thread, you can see that the spatter paint was shot over body color paint. So I wonder if they did that to help hide welds from sheet metal repair during the resto?

any non-STANDARD (Charger, Dodge b-body) available color would be "special order paint"

& it's the Newark, DE plant "F" c-body assembly plant that used spatter paint in the trunks (plant #6 pre-'68)

Some people just live in dream worlds. When I bought mine, the PO said it was a "special order" "special handling" car and had special fender tags to show it. I took all that with a grain of salt, because I KNEW that without a build sheet, anything he told me was speculation only. I am perfectly happy with my base model, non-matching number car. Everything else is just a story.... Interesting, but a story.

As the old saying goes, Buyer Beware......

What was the guy asking for it? (sorry if I missed that somewhere)

crj1968

He was asking a trade for something in the ball park of $100K.  Then his buddy chimed in and kept saying it was worth $150K all day long etc..

My 70 500 is the same way- guy owned it a long long time and said it was all original numbers matching etc....but then I said well what about this (radiator support VIN different, wrong color paint here and there.  "Oh yeah, well that....I mean you know...."

I think Don is saying that Spike (screen name here), 999RT/SE (screen name on the '70 Registry)...he owns a 999 special order paint car, that originally left the factory painted silver. It's still silver, after it's resto.

I remember it as any color that Chrysler had available in all their car line, so let's say this Charger is a Burgundy that was only used on "C" body's so you can get it.

Don't think you could get a Ford or Chevy color but don't know that for sure so please chime in if you know.

Yes the ad had 100 on the top so someone joked about the $100 and he got a little nasty with that guy in the beginning of the post. Then another said worth 135K 150K and finally 200K and the consensus kept saying how BJ was the place bla bla bla.

Really just wanted to help him understand that he was fed a line. Finally I asked if he believed if the chrome aircleaner and latch-tray were factory too? I didn't even mention the valve covers or wrong stripes on the car. (someone else pointed that out)
His response was a big judge from BJ saw his car in NY and told him the latch- tray was aftermarket (yeah OK where do they sell those for 70 Chargers) and the aircleaner was a Chromed original.

Anyone remember years back there were high end Mopars for sale @ a place in the desert (Arizona?) with a real nice place that had parking for cars inside the house.

That was Bill Weimanns place.  He owned this car & had it on ebay trying to peddle it.

I've seen a 999 State/County mantienance orange in real life twice
999 Silver three times
And haven't seen this one in person but the have the tag.

My fender tags crammed full of options.  This one has a space between Y39 & END.  Then there's Dave, lol.

Dodge Don

Did not imply all 999 cars were silver....could theoretically be any paint offered on Chrysler models that year. Although I suppose that might be potentially limited to paint on the models built at the same assembly plant.....example: if you wanted a colour that was not used on any model built at St. Louis where all 70 Chargers were built is it reasonable to expect Chrysler to ship in paint to the plant to paint one car? I wonder.....maybe you ordered and ran the risk of the dealer calling you back and saying that colour not available...you can pick from these other options.....

And I was referring to Spike's 999 car as being better than this one.

The owner stated that BX cabled abomination was an alarm system.  I offered to him that yes the DEALER that put said alarm system in more than like added that splatter (over everything including the fill tube) paint.   The factory would never revisit a completed car to add that paint (as witnessed by the body color present under that alarm box)

Here's what my book sez about the 999 Special order code. LEON.

RallyeMike

I'd still like to hear what the 999 order process actually entailed if anyone knows. For someone as picky as this special order car was, could they have said that they wanted such and such color AND splatter the trunk like my Dad's Imperial? What did the instructions for a 99 paint job look like?

I agree it's highly unlikely, but I don't think the door is 100% closed either. They put a red plaid interior in a blue Demon,.... is the splatter paint available on other Chrysler cars being applied to a Charger really that much of a stretch? It would be interesting to look this car over closely and draw an independent opinion.

with a little help from others - I follow Don's silver comment - sorry 'bout that!  :icon_smile_blackeye:

most of the known '70 b-body Special Order Paints Y39/999 are exclusive colors from the '70 c-body line (A4 - "silver metallic", A9 - "dark gray metallic", R8 - "burgundy metallic") - none of which would be a STANDARD available color at St. Louis.

I have a copy of an invoice for an EA9 '70 318 Challenger - MSRP for the "special order paint" was $62.60
early paperwork for the Superbird shows a Suggested Retail for "999 - Corporate Blue" at $69 and change (or close, can't find it right now) that didn't happen, but - WAG the Charger would've been the same money.
Mike Ross' 1970 Fury III "special order paint" FM3 body & EW1 roof shows  $106.55 on the window sticker (minus $23.30 for the two-tone V02) = $83.25

there are cars painted discontinued colors from prior years (FM3 '71 Charger R/T, FM3 '72-'73 Dusters, FC7 '74 'Cuda, etc.) PROOF of the original color can be difficult!
there were also "FLEET colors" that could be purchased on cars.  I don't know of any specific '70 Charger examples but there are '68 "Omaha orange" Chargers (think "safety orange" that you'd see on state/highway/dot vehicles).

the "FLEET" paint program allowed for some creative car ordering (sponsored by Dealer Associations / other) where quantities of 50 or more cars could be ordered with "SPECIAL PAINT" at no additional charge, Bengal Chargers took advantage of this as well as 100s of '68/'69 Road Runners & Barracudas painted "Omaha orange".  I believe the "Playboy pink" '65/'66? Barracudas are also a by-product of this.  My brother has a "Special Order Paint" '73 440 Charger SE (JB9 - "dark blue metallic" again c-body ONLY), that according to the 2nd owner (salesman that sold it new) claims the order was placed with a cop car FLEET order & the paint was no-charge.

& if you were paying the bill $$$ Chrysler would paint a car your "Corporate Identity" color or a color from another manufacturer (GM, FoMoCo, AMC, etc.).

I would not be surprised if the 999 cars were sent to Creative Industries to be painted. Chrysler still out sources low production & special order cars today. LEON.

Alaskan_TA

999 paints were available across the board, if the paint was commercially available, you could get it. It could be a Ford, Chevy or John Deere color. etc, etc., it did not matter - as long as it was available.

The plants had paint vendors on site & they could mix up small batches on site as needed.

One of the reasons I got into Mopars back in the early 80's was I thought it was cool that you could have ordered a rig up any way you wanted.

usually destination charges are figured as shipping from Detroit (based on weight or additional handling), all I could find for a 2015 Hellcat was

to PA & IL $995
to ON $1695 (but I'm sure most of that has to do with pricing in CAN$ vs. US$)

WAG that's the same destination charge for any Challenger to the same region (NOT Hellcat specific).

Funny....those Challengers are all built at the Brampton Ontario Canada Assembly plant and it costs $1695 to ship it to a dealer a few blocks away :o

same as it was in 1970 .....

you have access to a number of authentic '70 Charger window stickers, check the destination charges for a car shipped to Detroit VS. one shipped to St. Louis - Detroit will be less $$ & the Chargers were all built in St. Louis.
