Tina

Hello guys,
I am new here and I thought probably you could help me.
I am from Europe- Slovakia and me and my BF will come to USA in the first week of April.
We definitely decided to buy Dodge Charger 1968, we were looking for one in Europe, but here is the price not fair compared to condition of the car.
So I would like to ask you, (cause I saw that here are so many of you experts for Chargers  ;) if is it easy to find and buy some Charger 68 somewhere in USA?
It is not important where in USA, we will arrange to go anywhere for it.
We were checking also some auctions or ads, but I wanted to ask you here what do you think.
It is not important which engine will be in there, but important for us is bodywork, which should be rust free, or only little bit at not important parts of bodywork.
Excelent paintwork is not needed. Also interior can be damaged, but with all parts.
Also it has to be fully running- I mean the engine, that we can leave after buy with it with no problems.

Thank you for your kind replies and help.
I hope we will find our new baby for our garage  :patriot:

First off, welcome to the forum   Any particular options you'd like to have with the car?  Budget?

Tina

Thank you for your welcome  ;)

Oh, I forgot to write budget. Let´s say approximately max 20000. It everything depends on the condition of car.
Of course when we will find some cheaper it will be bonus, cause we will also have to arrange some transport to Europe and that also cost something.

The main parts will be great to have in or with car, but you know some interior parts will not be problem if they will missing.

Hi Tina!

Welcome  :2thumbs:
I'm from Hungary not far from you!I have just bought a '68 charger from Indiana after looking for one for two years. But my search was difficult because i wanted a true r/t (440 engine) 4 speed car.
'68 chargers for sale are rare and if they run commend big bucks.Your best bet would be looking at ebay, craigslist and wanted sections here and on for b bodies only forum.
http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,121994.0.html

Just a note!Even if the interior is complete but damaged you still need to buy new parts so i wouldn't get to hang upon on the interior parts.
Unfortunately everything is mega expensive for these cars but this is what it is!

Shipping would be $1700-2000 in shared container from East Cost to Rotterdam.Cheapest tax there in Europe,6 percent on classic cars and was told easier custom but haven't experienced any of it yet.Plus shipping within the States depending on the distance.Tax on your car and parts you may bring with it then shipping to Slovakia.Roughly 1200km 11-12 hours trip so that's another 1000 euros or so.
Just because the car run it doesn't mean it's roadworthy and might need new wiring, suspension, brakes, wheels, tires, exhaust, gastank and million of little parts. You could spend 20k easily on parts alone!
But probably you are gonna be the only one with a '68 charger there just like me in Hungary!!!

Good luck with your search and hope you can find what you want!
People here are very friendly and helpfull, great bunch for sure!

All the best,

Peter

welcome to the site. Good luck in your search. one way to help find your car is to look at a middle man in the states to aid with checking the car out etc... before buying sight unseen.  There are also people on here who would be willing to check out a car if it was close to a members house. Buy a person lunch and a few bucks for gas, and it could save you a lot of grief dealing with someone about a car not up to snuff.  Be sure to keep us informed when you find your baby!!!!!! :2thumbs:

cavemanno1 : Great to see you here neighbour    I was wondering, if I will find somebody from Europe here.
Yes we still check ebay and few days ago I found the craigslist and Bbody page, so these are my favourites all day long  :icon_smile_big:
We have already contacted those seller of few chargers 68 in link what you mentioned, he sent us few pictures, but all those cars are not what we are looking for.

We know that everything is not cheap, but we want to work on the car step by step, it is for us some kind of relax :) We have more european cars in garage but we decided after few years thoughts that we definitely need US car and it has to be charger 68  :drool5:
So we are looking for some kind of "badass" car with good condition of body and running engine.
It will be our car for rest of life, not only for few years, so we will have so much time to work on.

nvrbdn: thank you for great idea, this will be very helpful, so probably I will ask here somebody for help when we will find something.
Or then when we will arrive in April, if somebody will find free time to go with us to take a look at some baby  ;)

How is the registration law in Slovakia for classic cars?In Hungary they have an inspection called "old timer" car inspection where they give out point for originality, quality and all around driveability. You loose points for every little flaws so we have to restore these cars to kinda factory condition :brickwall:

The problem is with getting all the parts to shipped to you after you got your car is shipping cost and tax, vat!
To here a $150 item would be around $300-350 depending on the weight and sizes. We have 27 percent import tax on the purchase price plus shipping cost which would be half the buying price, again it depends on the weight and size, then they tax that amount with 25 percent in the name of other bullshit taxes!!!

Imagine to have a disc brake kit sent to you that cost $600 and weights 10-15 kg?A windshield that cost $160 or so would be 1000 euro to Netherland plus shipping to your country!I know because i have checked it!

Everything is expensive but if you ad shipping and tax on them they are unreasonably expensive. That is why all American cars in Europe are so expensive i think.

Check mobile.de a German car site. They have chargers as well but the cheapest one is 35000 euros, which is probably $37-38k,and that's a plane Jane 318 auto green car. They don't even have a real r/t or 4 speed car for sale. They are rare in the States as well for sale!

If you find your car ask and pay someone to keep your car for a couple of months till you get the parts you need. Then ship it back with them.
Of course it is risky and need to trust that person but in my case i had no other option.

There is a big American car meeting in Hungary in Komaron at the end of the summer!Visit there, might find something else you like beside a charger!

there are a few 68 chargers on the market right now on craigslist that appear to be decent deals, i have a 68 that would be perfect for you but i have a guy who was supposed to put a deposit on it a week ago and has not yet, he has one more day and then im done with him. metal wise its in real good shape, it only needs quarter skins. in ur budget i could of built a fresh performance 440, rebuilt trans, all new wiring harness, all new disc brake conversion, sure grip rear, new quarter skins, all new rebuilt suspension.

Tina

cavemanno1: It is very similar here in Slovakia  :flame:  Tax, vat and we have also special tax for kW. I will write you PM with prices.

I agree that those are horrible shipping fees. That is the biggest problem, but we should be in USA 2 weeks, so the main parts which will be necessary, we hope we will find and buy and ship with car.

Also checking mobile.de, but like you write, prices are higher.

We know about that American car meeting  :yesnod:  100% sure we will come this year there.

cbrestorations:  Ohh, that sounds great  ;) Can you please send me some pictures of the car? And also some car details? Because we found today one on craigslist and it is also very good deal.
We have only problem, that we have air tickets for April, but we are definitely looking for some way how to manage some buy or deposit earlier then in April if the car will be ok.

Hello Tina and BF of Tina, welcome aboard

Good luck in your search :2thumbs:

20k is on the low end for a rust free running 68 Charger even if it's a 318 green Charger. But you never know you may find a great deal out there. Also if you're coming in April and pending how long you're staying & where you're staying, you may be able to hit one of the big Mopar swap meets and gather up some parts there. This board has plenty of info on all Chargers especially 2nd gen Chargers 1968-70.

Oh and BTW 68s are the best of all Chargers, GREAT CHOICE!!!

VegasCharger : Thank you for your welcome  ;)
We know that 20k is not much, but we have hope and positive thinking  :icon_smile_big:
We will arrive to Chicago in first week of April and stay for 2 weeks. Can you please write me more about the big Mopar swap meet? It sound perfect. Where and when?  :icon_smile_big:

Mopar Nut: Thank you, it is great to see kind guys here around  :icon_smile_wink:

Tina, tan top is your man!Been using his advice for 5 years now and i would have bough the first thing i saw if it wasn't for him  :smilielol:

They satart with "very rare".Wonder if it because the engine is not swapped out yet like the rest of the small blocks?

Tina is about 4 hours away from me so it would be great to have someone else as well with a '68 charger close by!
Hope you can find something!
I'd go with cbrestoration deal as it sound great!Plus he is well known here and might be more patient with over seas money transfer. When i bough my car it took the bank two weeks to sort out the wire transfer.
Had a few people who were not interested selling their car abroad because it is more hassle. But some love selling it to "naive" foreigners who won't check the car out before buying it.That happened to me the first time and got screwed by a former member here.

All the best!

Tina

tan top:  :2thumbs: thank you for your observation, we really appreciate it!
We decided to take the car from cbrestoration, so cross the fingers to that deal, if we will find soe way how to manage it with cbrestoration  ;)

cavemanno1 : It will be more then amazing to have some new friend few hours from our city with another charger 68  :vert: :vert:

1974dodgecharger

one of these days the value of these cars are gonna crash.....

cavemanno1

Then i will buy 3 more!!!John,i doubt they are going to loose their value a lot! They keep making movies with '68 '69 chargers and they are always gonna be popular just like most american muscle cars.Over here in Europe they are crazy about them, unfortunately most of them can't afford them.

Fingers crossed cbtestoration will do a business with you!Ask him to do a 4 speed swap while the car is there,if he will do it!

Tina

If one day would it be possible, I would have couple of chargers no matter of the value  :coolgleamA:
high or low value, who cares when that car looks damn good  ;)

4 speed manual trans, would be some kind of perfection  :drool5:  ;D

cbrestorations

i can tell you there are 5 less chargers in the world thanks to a new movie being filmed right now

cbrestorations

my car is available only if this other guy doesnt pay a deposit by today, i have given him plenty of time in 2 weeks just to pay the deposit.
