I know there are kits out there to make a 383 into a 438 and 496....is there a kit to make a 383 into a 426? (both have 4.25" bore, figure it should be doable)

Kit, I don't know.  Don't really who's putting together what kit.

It is a turned down 440 crank main journal and finding a piston you like.  Ross has them.  I think with the Ross piston you can use a std LY rod, if not just get the 440 source rod that is a Chrysler rod with a 0.990" pin.  Just spend a few minutes in the catalogs and you can probably find 5 ways to do what you want.

500" NA, Eddy head, pump gas, exhaust manifold with 2 1/2 exhaust with tailpipes
4150 lbs with driver, 3.23 gear, stock converter
11.68 @ 120.2 mph

If I remember, I'll call 440 Source tomorrow and talk with them to see if it's feasible or not

That's funny.   Why do I bother.

is just about meet the RB stroke... with same bore of course will reach 426. Pistons are available. 440source in fact get this option ontheir tech archives

400 with 440 stroke makes the same, 440s, just with .022" increased bore over. So my 400 on 3.75" stroke and 0.020" overbore is the same than a 440 with .042" overbore ( a 448 ), due the bore difference.

EDITING... the 383--->438 stroke, is using same 426 configuration AND bore, JUST that the overbore is assumed when rebuilding the engine... just like the 400 to 451, assumed to be +.033" bore from the standard 400. TIPICALLY you would never rebuild the engine on the standard bore ( unless sleeving )

when you rebuild a 426 to + .030" you never "rename it" 438, just say is a 426 .030" overbored... which is in fact a 438

:iagree: Just turn down the mains on an RB crank to the B size....instant 426.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

the "438" is a ".060" overbore, not a ".030" overbore.....

so that basically answers my question about the kit from 440 Source....seems the "438" kit will be the way to go here

Nacho-RT74

well, Actually I didn't make the maths, just analizing the 440source info... it seems they are basing the maths on the .06" overbore then

yea, kinda what I figured as well....now I just need to decide on a camshaft...not too mild, not too radical, must be streetable with a nice lope out the exhaust

this will be my last engine build in my lifetime

I'm happy with what I got from the Crower 282 HDP on my stroker... is something like a friendly 474-280 MP. I can run the AC with it

I think that cam might be just a tad bigger than I want....will have to do some more checking on that

c00nhunterjoe

Might as well bore it and unshroud the valves

Plan! Tell us what size cam you want and we'll all agree with you!

and a video with car already at home... strill needing some adjusting ( I'm a rooky on this ) but gives you an idea.

Engine is 400 stroked, no headers just HP manifold, TQ carb with basic performance intake, no crosspipe. 2.5 hexhaust, Flowmonster SS mufflers ( similar to dinomax, semi straight duct with fiberglass ). big valves and porting job
