Is using Loctite on rocker shaft bolts a good idea?

Thats almost as bad as the guy i knew that antiseized the rocker shafts so the rockers wouldnt stick to them.

The reason I asked was I had a the last bolt come loose and the shaft broke at the #4 bolt making the engine unhappy after it ejected the #8 cylinder lifters from their bores..  So now I am installing new shafts , bolts, roller tipped rockers and push rods.

Maybe I did not tork them properly. It took 8 years and 40,000 miles to loosen.  :shruggy: Thought the Loctite would be a little extra insurance.

I would think the shaft flexed or failed, or the bolt stretched. If you are upgrading to roller rockers and hardened shafts, consider upgrading to studs and or billet mounts that are far superior and wont flex like the stock parts.

The Eddy heads have helicoils in the bolt hole they appear fine. I put the shaft back on and torqued the bolt with no problems. Just not sure how it happened. it looks like the bolt backed out and the engine ran for awhile flexing the shaft at the #4 bolt  before it broke.  :shruggy:  Did not seam to hurt the engine otherwise ,I shut it down immediately and towed it home. I will find out for sure when I start it again.

So I will be taking your advice on the hardware, it comes with CM shafts, hold down blocks and new fasteners.

Can you do me a favor, post a couple of pictures of the inside of the rocker body where it rides on the shaft.  I would like to see the details of any oil grooves that they put in there.  Thanks

could always use studs & nuts  , &  is the recommended hardware for alumimum heads

next time I take my rocker gear off , think i'm going that route

Talked to Edelbrock, they recommend using studs on all five holes if I was concerned about the bolts coming loose. They provide 2 studs for each head ( 2nd & 4th ) hole with the heads. Their tech rep said he would have sent me more is they where available separately. He recommended contacting Hughes engines for the studs.

If there is a good fastener guy around you can use regular studs course on one end and fine on the other end.  Those places don't seem to exist around here, and maybe they are now extinct.

Looks like the oil comes out of the rockershaft holes which are lined up with the lower mounting bolt holes , not offset 15* like stock. The oil squeezes past the bushings and also goes thru the hole in the rocker body to the grove in the adjuster bolt to lube the pushrod cup. The oil goes thru a small hole to the top of the rocker for roller lube I guess. I will run with the valve covers off to see the oiling at work.

I'm wondering if these SS adjustable rockers are all made by the same manufacturer ?

I got exactly same pieces under PRW brand... half of rockers got seized the brass bushing. Pretty sure I'm having an oil fail on heads, but... still... wondering same question. Price difference is way noticeable between these pieces under diff brands

Comp Cams claims their made in the USA . When you pick up the whole rocker shaft assembly it is heavier than the stock assembly. The shafts are thicker , thick milled block steel shaft retainer hardware and  Chrome moly steel is supposed to by heavier than 1020 steel. The Comp Cam rep I talked to said with the skeletonized design  the load the valve train sees from these rockers is less than many aluminum ones. Add in roller tips and chrome moly pushrods which felt lighter than the stock push rods, I hope it is an upgrade to my valve train. I will leave the rev limiter at 6100 rpm.

Note to BSB67: After I warmed the engine I removed the valve covers. Lots of oil coming out the sides of the rockers and the small oil hole for the roller tip and valve guides. In the few seconds it took to confirm the oiling ,I had a mess all over the headers.

Thanks.  I get considerable oil to the roller tip as well.
