22 reverse stamped on my fender tag

Looked at my fender tag for the first time in a long time and noticed a couple of things...

1) it was dented from being bent up at paint.

2) it has a weird reverse embossed 22 stamp on it.

I'm guessing that is an inspector's stamp of some kind.   Any thoughts?

I'm not going to restore this tag - but instead put it in my safety deposit box and give it to the next owner.  I'm going to have a repop done and I'm wondering if I should try to have the 22 stamped in it as well or just keep that as a unique part of the original

Hopefully, you all will tell me the 22 makes my car more valuable than the current Powerball lottery (1.3 billion as I write this)

Hi, most tags, if not all, were bent up from paint, pretty normal. The inspectors tag is a small aluminium one that went under a screw in one corner. Not sure what the 22 is sorry.

My 'Bee tag has R stamped on it...and another number I can't make out below the screw.

No, reputable, tag manufacturer will put inspection marks on the tag. Why not just clean it, paint it and reinstall it to the car?

Well, one is the value of it and I had the original fender tag stolen off my 6 pack cuda.

Two, even though my tag is in really good shape (I am doing a concours restoration so the new clean tag will match the car).  Overall, that's been part of my restoration dilemma - how much of the worn but original stuff do you keep on the car?  I have original seats (not even torn) but they are pretty discolored even with a professional clean up.   So, I'll probably recover the seats but hang onto the original materials.   It's a never ending struggle to decide what to restore and what to replace.

Third, by giving it to the new owner (in a year or two) - I'll let them make that decision.

Redbird

Inspectors stamp. For Superbirds usually 21 or 22, sometimes no stamp. I've seen a B, 4, and R also.

70Sbird

same stamp on mine, in almost the same place!

Guess they all have it.

Just funny Rainbows was stamped from the top, everyone elses from the bottom.

Mine is identical to Rainbows....

As a general rule - Lynch Road tags weren't bent up......they weren't installed in the usual place.....they were usually hanging in the car....and they received very little to no paint at the plant.

Because of this - the mounting screws will have no paint on them.

Are the tags above all from original paint cars?

birdsandbees

So they just reached in with a hand squeezer and put their mark on it as it hung from the visor hole?! Grabbing which ever side they could quickly, makes sense. My tag (from my Bee) above had never been removed from the fender since it left Lynch Rd until I removed it a month ago. Has a coat of tremclad over the original B5.

My tag shows no signs of ever being bent, also this was on the car from new,car cam from original owner, refinished it when I did the car in 92 but never installed, would have been ask questions I couldn't answer so left it off.

Redbird

Not saying there is no possibility that there is only one Superbird with the "Body In White" fender tag. Though even the Werst/Tosten/Jennings car does not have one.

There was a thread discussing "Body In White" fender tags in 2008. The jest was-cop car tags.

If I was betting a Hot Chocolate, I'd say 1st owner salvaged it off a cop car and added it to make it look special.

Well, there WAS at least ONE SUPERBIRD COP CAR!    Somewhere there is a video of it being tested.

Who knows - that might be the one

Personally knowing the first owner for 40 + years, that is very unlikely but not impossible, thats why I made the statement about not putting it back on.The car was originally purchased direct from Chrysler, not through a dealer by Charlie Shetrom, the same gentleman who had the first US shipped Daytona .Both cars were 40 mile from me from the day they were purchased.Beyond this,I have no more answers.
