I make routine trips to the dump for many reasons. At my place I have lawn and tree maintenance, I buy derelict cars with junk in them, all sorts of reasons why junk finds me and I have to get rid of it.
Almost 3 years ago an old timer finally had enough and wanted to clear out all his car stuff. I got almost all of it. Yeah, I got the bad with the good. 273 and 318 heads, drum brake parts, AND about 20-25 tires on small bolt pattern wheels. I don't deal with the small bolt stuff and every one of the tires was 15 years past being roadworthy.
The dump allows 4 tires per visit, anything over 4 is $1.50 per tire to leave there. What to do?
I made a "tire lasagne".
The bed of the truck was first covered in 8 tires laid flat. I covered that with old blankets and junk plywood. THEN another load of tires covered with tree branches and leaves. I put another 8 tires on that along with some bags of grass, misc boxes and other junk. I have side boards on the truck allowing me to pile up to the top of the cab. I waited to go on a busy Saturday so the attendant was distracted. The tires were disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner. (Instead of leaving them on the side of a lonely 2 lane road)
I laughed about it on the way home. I beat "The MAN."

Hey Kern now you can go eat some real lasagna.

Yeah I know....
This was more about trying to be sneaky rather than saving money. It would have taken 6 months of dump visits to dump all of the tires for free. They still require people to separate all tires to a dumpster where they shred them for use in road work.

At first I thought that Kern was out-of-line and cheating (small cheat but still bad mojo).

But then I remembered that we have a tire tax here in the People's Republic of Kalifornia.

http://www.boe.ca.gov/lawguides/business/current/btlg/vol4/ctfl/ctfl-all.html

Those tires already have been paid for to be recycled, $1.75 per tire at the time of purchase.  Assuming that they are not contraband tires from Nevada, etc.  We are already paying Sacramento for the recycling.  So therefore I approve that you stuck it to the Man on this occasion.

You are morally righteous in your conduct at the dump, comrade.

I've had a pyramid of tires in my back yard for many years because of the high cost of getting rid of them. Where I live (oregon) the cost to dispose is $5 ea without rims and $7.50 with rims.

It seems odd that they have such a negative value. :shruggy: And it's little wonder why people are moved to find another way to make then go away. :slap:

Lighthorseman

...Hold on a sec here...

"Congrats, you saved 10 bucks."

"What?  4 times $1.50 is $6.00."

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but the crafty Mr. KernDog actually put 24 tires in the back of his truck...

"The bed of the truck was first covered in 8 tires laid flat. I covered that with old blankets and junk plywood. THEN another load of tires covered with tree branches and leaves. I put another 8 tires on that along with..."

So, by MY math, if he got the first 4 for free, he snuck in 20 tires at 1.50 a pop, for a total of a whopping 30 BUCKS!   :2thumbs:

Enough for three lasagnas!

skip68

In California, I think it's a civic duty to stick it to the man.  All of you that live there have been paying for it X10 one way or the other.
$5 a tire here in Oregon?   Wow.   :o.

Whoa! Has the tide turned?
Lighthorseman got it right. It was something like 24 tires total. I was wondering when someone would notice that. With the bad responses, I figured that if I reminded people of that, they'd just pile on more. I started a similar thread on Moparts and got my ass handed to me.

Hit me with a tire iron.  I only did a quick look at the tires on that first layer.  Lighthorseman is absolutely correct with all the layers.

You'd think I poured used 40wt all over the White House lawn for all the jerkoffs over at Moparts that complained. They missed the forest for the trees.
Call it cheating? Okay.

Look at the racers that "cheated" to make the race cars faster. They pushed the limits until they won or were caught. People cheered and were impressed by their ingenuity.

Look at police and anti-terrorism task forces. They take liberties to stop these radical assholes and the only ones that are offended are the ACLU liberal idiots and the criminals themselves.

A large majority of people fudge the numbers on their tax forms, yet nobody has the balls to step up and admit it.

People eat grapes at the grocery, speed on the freeway, lie in court, flirt while married, break a tool, buy another than return the broken one for a refund, etc and never feel any guilt over it.

On the other hand, John....
Sometimes someone does something that they think is funny and in some misguided yet optimistic way, posts about it. THEN instead of a few people seeing the humor in a "Tire Lasagne", they run full speed with hard line opinions of theft and irresponsibility.

WAY to see the whole picture, people.

I thought that posting this would get a few laughs. This does highlight the lack of humor some people have.

The interesting thing is, the people with NO sense of humor often don't know it. Sorta like bad breath.

Stupid laws and regulations tend to invite violations and those that make them should expect protest violations.

The example in this thread is a good one. :2thumbs:  Old tires are a reality. They need to be dealt with.

Let's say this same idea was used when thinking about sewage.---Individuals make it and it needs to be dealt with. If we had to collect our sewage and take it in and pay for it by the batch to be processed instead of the way we do this now I suspect their would be some littering going on. :eek2:

Dealing with old tires is just another part of the waste we generate and industrial solutions are at hand.

In oregon we still have a bottle bill in place that gives money for empty cans and bottles.---Why can't we get money for old tires as opposed to paying to toss them??----We pay for the bottle deposit when we buy the soda just as we can pay for the tire deposit when we buy a tire. :slap:

To be able to get paid for old tires, one would have had to pay a surcharge (ie. deposit) when you bought them in the first place.  Since the older ones would not have had a deposit placed upon them, there is no money to be returned on them.  It is kinda hard to retroactively allow the old ones to be cashed in without losing massive amounts of money in the process at the start, so who will end up funding it?  It costs time to process tires, so recycling them costs money to someone when handling them.  I guess a state could pass a tire deposit law, if they have enough cash reserves on hand.  Another catch is that you would have to deal with out of area people wanting to cash in on their old tires with your program.  (I saw this happen with pop can deposits before.)  That issue would have to be dealt with someway.

My state charges you a fee when you buy a new tire if you do not turn in the old one at that time.  If you do turn in the used tire, it will be disposed of by the place you buy the new tire from.  The catch is that you have to buy a new tire to get rid of the old one for free.  It is like a deposit program in reverse...
