Cooling Question

I will be running a fresh 512 stroker motor with a stock 1970 26" radiator / shroud combo and probably a 180 thermostat, no heater core, milodon mechanical water pump with stock housing. Do you think I will need anything else to keep the temp in the normal range like a electric fan set up? It does get hot here in the summer like 80-90 range.

I believe that one of our members named cdr has a 512 in his 68, i cant find his build thread, but maybe he will chime in and help you on both this question and your gearing questions. or you can try to find his thread on his car.

Electric cooling fan couldn't hurt, although I think a properly functioning stocking cooling system should be enough.  Have you ever considered an aluminum radiator?  CDR, a383wing and I are all running the same aluminum radiator from ECS and our cars have never run cooler...

on the stock radiator all you can do is try it, if not , like MYK said, alum radiator works !!!!!

I agree.  All I changed on my car (before I tore it apart for resto) was a swap to aluminum radiator and it made a HUGE difference.  And I didn't use a high dollar one, I got a universal one from summit years ago.

I cannot give you an answer, only an opinion.

I think if you have a good radiator (Professionally flushed/cleaned and flow rate tested) and a good factory clutch fan, 550 hp or less, it should work.

If it were mine, I would try it before I went making any changes.

500" NA, Eddy head, pump gas, exhaust manifold with 2 1/2 exhaust with tailpipes
4150 lbs with driver, 3.23 gear, stock converter
11.68 @ 120.2 mph

Yes, and you will have to use shorter bolts I believe.  And whatever you do, just do what Brian above you says;  he gets irritated when people don't listen to him lol...

By stock radiator, is it a 2 row or 3 row? If it is a factory 2 row, it wont be enough in summer heat and slower speed cruising. I had a good factory 26" 2 row in my car with a mild 383 and it was fine until i cruised at slow speed in traffic, then it would creep up. If yours is a 3 row, you will probably be ok.

that's what I'm using on my cars, but I am using the Hayden 1705 clutch unit....it's shorter so it won't hit the thicker radiator

How do I know if my current fan will accept a clutch?

if it has a very large hole in the middle of the fan blade, it's for a clutch fan.....see pic with large hole in center for fan clutch assembly
