It's the tooth thing . If I'm off a tooth (or 2) how does this make a difference? Can't I make this up by turning the dizzy? For that matter , couldn't I put my number 1 opposite where it SHOULD be and .......

The teeth on the timing chain?  I don't know enough to help, but I can guess that this clarification will be asked.  If it is the Distributor (teeth, to the camshaft), then I think you are not in a bad situation.  Others will correct me if I am wrong, but I think that the issue is simply having the rotor point toward the #1 spot at TDC (in other words, the #1 spot can be different depending on how the distributor teeth mesh with the cam teeth, but the rotor should point at #1 when it is supposed to fire).  See what others say?
Who in their right mind would say

"The science should not stand in the way of this."?

Science is just observation and hypothesis.  Policy stands in the way.........

Or maybe it protects us.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

The valves will be opening and closing before or after they should in conjunction with the crank and pistons.  Unless you're talking about the distributor being off a tooth.  In that case yes the distributor can be turned to compensate it.   If there's clearance of course.

My son's jeep is 180° out.  So I swapped the plug wires until we take it apart.    Runs perfect.    :icon_smile_cool:

It dose not make any difference to the engine which distributor drive teeth line up. As long as the timing is correct and the firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.

If you take it  to Acme old car repair and ask them to tune it up. A non standard set up will cause some confusion if they change the plug wires.

Now if you are going to put the timing chain in a tooth or two off, I want to race you for titles.  :smilielol:

Sorry , yes I meant the dizzy to cam. Thanks for the replies.

Still , I think I remember being able to get a timing chain set that you could "adjust" ???
