I see a lot of GLs with crossed flags on the Dutchman panel, what is the reason for that?  Was it in one of the movie versions or is it just a cool thing among the DoH crowd or?

i'm far from a  DOH & GL expert ,  I believe those  crossed  flags  , ( Rebel & chequered )  , were only on  the first 5 or 6 Georgia built & filmed episodes  , I await to be  corrected

IMO they were the proper GLs ,  think they all had the LEE 1 style cage & no back seat & small push bar  , looked much much better  :Twocents:

The Georgia Episode cars had the crossed flags .  CA cars did not.

When they shot that episode, that Charger was the age of a 2006 model today.  Weird to think about.

jaak

I'm not even sure if they were on all the Georgia cars, I'm thinking they were just on the first three built in California and sent to Georgia (GL 1, 2, and 3).
LEE 4 (built in GA) Doesn't appear to have it.

GeneralLee440

Just a little bit of movie knowledge on that ginger hellyun that was spitting soda on the back window of the General, he played Rusty in National Lampoon's European Vacation.
But on another note yes I wouldve slapped the crap out of him as well

I never cared for those and didn't put them on my car.    It is weird when you think about it only being a 9-10 year old car at the time.
That's why I always tell people that hate seeing the cars trashed on the show it wasn't a big deal.  Most didn't want these cars anymore and I wouldn't think much about destroying a 10 year old used car either.   Besides, they repurposed those cars until they couldn't use them anymore.  Only a fraction of a fraction of these cars were destroyed due to the Dukes show.
Far as that kid from the orphanage, that's why he was there.
He was a little chit.      Didn't that kid have a goofy voice or am I imagining wrong?

Yeah, they peeled the set off Lee1 and eventually installed them on Lee4. They were super cheaply made stickers. In the shot where you see Rusty Griswold spitting soda in the rear window and they pull away, just before the cedits roll,  you can see some sort of clear film laid over them on a car to protect them from getting wet (it was raining out that day). It almost looks like saran wrap.

That was just one item included by the original California crew that didn't last long. The very first item to go was a cowboy decal on the back window, just above those flags. They only had one and used it on what was supposed to be the "picture car". A couple days into filming that picture car was being used for a lot of stunts and stunt cars were being used for closeups, they had no additional decals provided by the studio builders, so they dropped it and removed it from the picture car. One scene where you can still see it is when they pull up to the 4 way intersection and the camaro, torino, and el Camino split off.

Probably a stupid question but did any of the General Lee's ever get roof and door decals later on in the 80's?

There were several different builders over the years, each with slightly different techniques. The roofs on the series always contained some painted elements. At first 100% paint hand applied with sign paint, then the final car built for the Georgia shoot had some vinyl elements used (stars and boarders), then in California, the letters were changed to vinyl. The red and blue parts of the flag were painted though.

Doors, they started out as vinyl. Cheap vinyl you can watch bubble up on the cars within the first two episodes. A transition was made to paint on some. Back in Cali, they went back to vinyl. Then different builders alternated again.

Thanks Brock.   :2thumbs:  Some really good information.

Yep, DOH is a fascination just like so many others.

It's no weirder than knowing the correct OEM finish for an air cleaner washer or lower control arm.  Everyone is a nerd by somebody else's standard.
