    being from oz and never having driven/rid in one , I'd always assumed that E body's  would drive/ride like a  3rd gen B body

I'm not sure if they were marketed toward Servicemen, but as a former one myself, I wanted nothing to do with Green when I got out. I think it's more likely the color fads of the era.  Lots of Avocados, Golds, Browns, Greens and Oranges in furniture and fashion during that time. Many ugly car colors.
