So I finally found a 69 I could afford. Another guy's parts car. He's making a 68 into a general lee. The 69 parts car is still pretty workable. I spoke with him a month ago and we agreed on a price. i've just been waiting for him to finish getting his parts off it.
I call him today, and he says he switched the vin onto his 68 so I'll "Just have to find another one" He wants his 68 to "be worth more as a real 69".
So basically its a parts car again. I'm soooo pissed!!!!
I may still get it cause it's a good deal. But, man I'm hot. I was so close.

End Rant!

Well seeing how that is really illegal not too good for that car.  But you and I guess he are the only ones who know.

is he doing all the numbers?

well... being the a55hole that I am, i would get the car, then politely call the local highway patrol's office to let him know that he did a VIN swap.  But that is just me.

HEHEHEHHE..... I like that

:brickwall:  Another reason to "Hate the Duk......" Ok I won't get started on that.

Why not sell both the charger's he has and get a 69? Maybe that wouldn't make any seance either if he's just going to turn around and sell what he has. The work involved to get a 68 converted to a 69 is allot more extensive than I think most people realize. It's not just the grill and taillight's. You have upholstery and door lock's, side markers, back up lights. The list goes on. Maybe if you mention this and the fact that what he is doing is illegal will change his mind. I'm thinking there are vin number's stamped in different locations on the vehicle and if gets inspected down the road that could get it impounded if things don't match up and create a bunch of red tape that he my have to go threw.

Try and get both VIN's so the registry guys have something for their files.  This could possibly help out you, me and perhaps someone else in the future.

No, just the vin on the dash. The interior in the 68 was burnt in a fire, so he needed a dash. He said his vin tag was okay. So, I told him I'd give him a 68 dash to replace his so I could keep the one in the 69. It all sounded great, we'd both have numbers matching cars. In the meantime, he changed his mind and decided to make his a 69. I think he's been talking to someone.

See, the crazy part is, he went through one of those title agencys to get the title for the 69. He said everything checked out fine and he had to have a cop come out and check the vin and car to make sure it was legit. So this cop and notary both sign that the car checks out, he gets his new title, and then simply removes the vin after they leave.

"Oh, I am keeping my car forever & will never sell it, so rebodying (no such thing, it's called swapping VIN tags) is the best way to go. I can keep the structural integrity of the car, save the trouble of all that work, do it so it brings another car back from the crusher, restore another classic for all to see & it's not about the money."

Absolutely no reason to "swap Vin tags" other than increase the value illegally.

Let me see on my 70 there is no radiator support left,  the trunk rail has been replaced by another car with a different # it was but welded on and done nicely.  I only have the dash...... I guess I am screwed.  Ohhh wait anyone who cares on a car as heavily modified as mine needs there head examined :P

Yup..sure its fine to have a modified car and know that you got a bit from here,  a bit from there etc. Most of us here on this board when selling their charger  :o(yes, it does happen :o) would sit down over a coffee with the prospective buyer and discuss every aspect of work undertaken on the car...with bills,....hundreds of photos.....overflowing with enthusiasm and with a tear in the eye. The new buyer will buy the car confident that you are straight talking and an honest enthusiast, regardless of how much of the car is original....
BUT
That is not the same as "rebodying"  or illegally changing the identity of a vehicle. Its illegal for a reason.
Imagine....that charger sat in your garage...its been there maybe 4-5 years...its your pride and joy. One day you are out in it, get pulled over for a minor road traffic offence, the cop puts your vehicle details through the system and it turns out that the vin number is off a different car which was...............STOLEN! Your pride and joy is impounded and you have no recourse to any assistance in law to get it back. :icon_smile_angry:

There's at  least one example of why ripping vin plates off one car and putting them on another is a bad plan..

So, Moparsons...it might sting right now, but you are better off in the long run...

i really can't say anything on this topic as we do this to our old farm trucks quite often  ::) me and my dad have collected sweptline style dodge trucks for years and occassionally when we couldn't get a title for one, we'd go out to one of our parts trucks and just swipe the serial number plate and use that title....oh well, sh*t happens
Daddy ran whiskey in a big black dodge
bought it at an auction at the masons lodge,

just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside,

Heres how u get him. Buy the 69 and then phone the cops and say that he stole the vin tag off of ur 69 and put it on his 68. U should be careful though cuz the cops might order for the 68 to get scraped because it has no vin tag but alteast u'll have ur 69 with its vin tag but u never know, u could end up with both chargers. :2thumbs:

And then u can drive by his house in ur 69 and  :nana:. He'll be crying big time :bawling: Lmao

I  don't know what makes him a bigger idiot, switching tags or even trying to turn a 68 into a 69 for a GL.

just let you know... there is a VIN tag hidden down the rear package tray... is attached on to the speakers tray sheetmetal... driver side rear corner.

Oh well at least is there on mine... and I think also in that way on earliers up there.

I say just get the Charger body away from him somehow.  Maybe you can't stop the guy from ripping off someone, but at least maybe you can get the other Charger out of his hands and build it for yourself.

If you have to illegally swap in yet another junker's VIN tags onto it just to build it, well . . . better you doing it than the present owner.  You're more trustworthy to put a VIN on from a simliar Charger's hulk than he is.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Or maybe you could find him another (fully dead) '69 Charger's VINs to use on his '68 that he seems hell-bent on re-tagging?

I'm not saying its the ideal thing to do, but it might help to contain the damage he's doing.  He would only screw up ONE intact Charger, not two.  And you'd get a car while also saving the '69 you're wanting to buy from losing its tags.  (And if you supply the tags for him, maybe you can pick a '69 car that's got a "stolen" rap sheet or something!)

moparsons

Sounds like a plan.   So...anyone got any dead, junked, or stolen 69 vins lying around?!?  LOL
