There has been a lot of talk about compression ratios lately.
I am looking to find out how to check the heads and block for actual volume, so that compression ratio can be calculated, on a 440.
If there are special items needed, where do I buy them?

You can run around and get the individual pieces but a kit is more practical. Here's a couple of head CCing kits from cheap to not-so-cheap:

If you have flat top pistons with no valve reliefs, the block volume is simple math, you need only a depth mike or calipers to measure the piston deck height. Valve relief volume can be checked with the same kit used for the heads.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

BSB67,
What is the fluid you use in the burret?
What are you using to seal the Plexiglas to the head?

Light white grease to seal the Plexi plate to the head, the white allows you to see the actual seal through the Plexi. Most kits recommend ATF or colored solvent but I prefer water, not so messy.

Same.  Any grease that is handy and water.

BSB67 posted a pretty fancy set up.  I've gotten away with a square piece of plastic and a baby bottle before. Baby bottles are simple because they are cheap and they  also have incremental measurements in CCs on the side and can be picked up nearly anywhere.

I've used alcohol as the liquid. Evaporates faster than water when your done and cleaning up.

I don't even think I paid for it.  I think the stuff was 20 years old when I got it 40 years ago.  It is actually pretty nice stuff.
