not really trying to get caught up in numbers...I have a 70 charger with a rebuilt 440 has the six pack pistons, lunati 240/250 @050 520/547 cam rpm intake 800 dbl. pump holley carb, msd ingnition 13/4 headers...heads are 452 that have been rebuilt with valve job nothing serious standard valaves...motor was done quite awhile ago but has less than 4000 miles & compression numbers are in the 150 lbs area in all cylinders...went to a dyno day a car put down 330hp to the wheels...I thought it would put more as I was told motor should have 450- to 475...the other bench racers were say ing my numbers showed lower because of the 4.56 gears & 4200 stall converter....any thoughts on this...thx

a BIG gear of 4.56 actually multiplies your torque....so it actually helped your power output.

With that setup it sounds about right actually 330HP is not bad in fact, 'normal' for a mild 440 I bet it had 450ft or more of TQ.

Our cars were not the 900HP people tend to think they were as our memories get fuzzy the older we get the better we get in our youth.

The numbers below 4200 could potentially be skewed, but once she flashes, its essetially 1:1. 330 to the wheels is nearly 400 flywheel. Not too shabby for 150 cranking psi. There is probably 15 hp left in tuning on that mill given the very basic info specs and stock heads. Maybe 20 with more carb.

Those power numbers are fine for the sum of parts in the build.  :2thumbs:

Typical stock rebuild 440 is ~280hp at the wheels so you're doing pretty good.  :yesnod:

The Factory (unported) heads are holding you back. In stock form a 452 will typically flow in the 220cfm range. That puts crank horsepower in the 400-425 area assuming everything is perfectly dialed in.  ;)

Considering it has stock heads....it's performing pretty good. A set of aftermarket aluminum heads would really wake it up !  :icon_smile_big:

I agree with others on here as well, and would add that your density altitude is also a factor. A big factor. Where I live, I've seen similar combos put 200-240 at the wheels. Can't say I've ever seen grown men so close to crying as when their 500hp combo barely breaks 200, but density altitude where I live can approach 10,000 and that will absolutely kill horsepower.

The numbers are corrected to standard conditions.
