Anyone have a leak caused by fuel expansion?

I had a problem with an older car always stinking of gas on the driver side even though there were no leaks. Someone looked at it and pointed out the filler did not have that little flap that opens when you insert the nozzle. So I hit a salvage yard and found one that would fit and it eliminated the fuel smell outside of the car. I know that isn't something available for Chargers, just something I was able to change on another car.

So I always fill my cars up before storing for the winter. A couple years ago the Mach 1 busted a fuel line and made a huge, scary mess. I am storing someone elses Charger and noticed a fuel smell over the weekend. I saw a puddle but nothing leaking - and the puddle wasn't under or even near any lines or low spots in the tank. I cleaned it up and waited to see if anything else happened. Yesterday I was working in the garage and could smell fuel again. I looked under the car and it was dripping steadily out of the frame rail!(?) I assumed it was leaking from the filler tube into the trunk but I didn't have the keys to open it up. I popped the gas cap open and could see fuel about 4" from the top. There were air bubbles and I could hear it gurgling. I went to get some hose to siphon some out but when I got back there wasn't any gas in the filler tube and the leaking had stopped. My garage is heated and I usually keep it at 50 degrees when I'm not there and 60 when I'm working. It has been warm but when I checked the temperature it was just below 70 inside. Would a 10-15 degree change in temperature really cause the gas to expend that much? Could there be something else increasing the pressure? Where else can this assembly leak from?

HA HA HA....Or should it be HO HO HO!  Today is Christmas ya know!

Sorry to bring up an old thread but this exact thing happened to me today!  Its about 60ยบ here in NYC today, humid & rainy.   Unusual for this time of the year.

Any hoo, I go out to garage for a garbage bag....open door & get a distinctive smell of gas.  Recently filled my snow blower up but that wasn't it.  Check under the left rear of the Charger & sure enough there is a small puddle of fuel along with melted traces of my under coating.  Looking further it was coming out of my vent tube.

Get my keys to open my locking gas cap and what do you know....same as Troy....fuel was "boiling" about 4" down the filler neck!   I filled up the tank a few weeks ago and added Sta-Bil and I thought I was getting some sort of chemical reaction.

By the time I turned around to get another rag, the fuel slowly subsided back down the filler neck like a Moray Eel going back into its underwater cave.

Never in 17 years have I seen the car do that!!  Must have been a perfect storm.

Now I need more undercoating on my bare frame rail! :rotz:

That sucks! At least you caught it somewhat early.

Now if you'd have been out driving like I was yesterday you would have avoided the mess... ;)

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Chris,

Yeh, I've had that happen when the temperature drastically changes like it has been the last few days.  Luckily, my garage has been sealed up and is for the most part climate controlled so I rarely get that problem anymore.
