Does anybody know if a manual drum brake master cylinder on a Daytona should be bare or painted black?

Thinking bare as a disc brake and booster were both black on n power set up that you dont have

As far as I know, manual drums would be a bare master.  That's how my C500 has been for as long as I know of it.

  The one on mine is bare with a cad lid. I sent mine of to Midwest power products and had a stainless sleeve installed. $150.00 and a two week turnaround. It is a manual drum setup. (Wingman).  Jay.

Bare.... I would put some clear rust inhibitor on it though unless you want it to have regular humidity surface corrosion.. If you're in an arid environment, then I guess it doesn't matter..

I had always thought they should be bare as well, however Roger Gibson tells me that is wrong and that it should be painted black.

My car now has a bare master cylinder casting, with a cad lid.  I have the original, but it's a bit crispy and probably not a good reference.   

Is there a reason Roger is not wanting to use the pattern found on your car pre-restoration?  Yours is not the only car I've seen (or seen photos of) which exhibits that pattern.

Yes and no. A 69 B-Body would have the gold booster if it was power drums. I have seen NOS drum masters painted.....that doesn't mean anything when it comes to assembly line procedures.

The answer? All that I have seen are: Natural body, gold top and zinc phos on the hold-down clamp and bolt

That's all I've ever seen either, however I certainly don't consider myself an expert. It sure looks like my original one was bare. I'm going to have to have a talk with Roger about this subject again. Thank you for your input.

Let me ask this question: Has anybody ever seen an original assembly line 1969 manual drum master cylinder that was painted black?

The only (manual drum) cars I found photos of with black-painted master cylinders have been repainted/restored... and there were only 2 of them.  While looking through all those folders I did find 3 or 4 more unrestored cars with bare m/c's though, plus a bunch of restored cars with castings au natural.

There may be some cars with painted m/c's, I just haven't seen any myself - which doesn't necessarily mean much since my sample size is quite small, all things considered.

Has Roger and/or Frank Badalson observed this on cars they've seen?

This is the original to this car,when I did the car.I did the cylinder as it was,also still has the part number tag on the bail.
