The Civil War was the first big ugly war to see much photography.  All the pics of corpses being shown back in the cities made a huge impact on the northern public.  They were far away from the war & not old enough to recall previous wars.


That whole war was a perfect-storm epic clusterf*ck of human carnage.   The timing of factors was brutally bad.  Industrial weapons + pre-industrial military tactics + officers without real experience + pre-industrial medical care for the wounded + huge numbers of people & resources.
