Just to clarify: XS can be either a 440 or 426. Fifth digit would be "L" for 440, or "J" for 426.

Agreed: If it's "XP" it's either /6 (C?), 318 (F), 383-2 (G), or 383-4 (H).

That's odd. A '68 or '69 "XP" Charger shouldn't have an "L". My understanding is the 440 and 426 cars are limited to R/T's, which would be an "XS" VIN (or Daytona or 500 "XX" VIN).

If it was a '70, it could be an "XP" with an "L", which would mean 383-2.

I'd be interested in seeing a photo of your '68's VIN plate.

In '69, there would have been a couple of instances where a 440 normally wouldn't be in a model:
1. Dart GTS and 'Cuda >>> would have an "M" for special order v8 for the fifth digit in the VIN ( base models here normally didn't have a 440 4bbl available )
2. Lift-off hood Road Runners and Superbees. 440's in '69 were not part of the normal engine package option on these. Again, the "M" was in the VIN for the engine designation...

Now, I have never seen a non-R/T '68 or '69 Charger with a "L" or "M", the later for '69..

In 68 the body was not stamped matching the VIN. If you have a random body with a XS fender tag and a matching 440 laying next to it, the owner can state all he wants. I dont know if the broadcast sheet can match a body stamping # to a certain VIN?

well went to take pics today and i was thinking of the wrong car. My bad its a 383 it has 4 barrel but it supposed to have a 2 Barrel G code.  must be getting old

Al Merkel, a member here, has a '69 "RT" with a an XP on the vin with a 'L' for the engine designation.  Years ago, at a charger.com get together in Kent Wa.  Gaylen G.  Looked it over and concluded that it was a factory fluke (mistake).
