68 charger, worth restoring?

Hi guys, I recently made a introduction post to the forum about getting my dream car, a 68 Charger. Since getting the car I have stripped the floors out and started getting a good look at the rust repair thats needed. The car was pretty incomplete when I bought it, missing the fenders,  hood, grill, interior. I knew it needed partial quarters and floor pans, plus a couple other areas of rust repair. But after peeling up the floor I have found a few of the cross braces and supports underneath need replacing or repairs including the inner rockers all the way to the rear wheel well tubs. I have done light restoration work but nothing this serious. So my question is does it sound like it's even worth restoring this car? Or should I move on to something else?  Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated and I couldn't figure out how to resize pics on my tablet to post them here.  Thanks guys and great site.

I suppose it all depends on if you feel it's worth it. It's very rarely a winning proposition to restore these. Depending on what you paid for it in the first place adds Into the equation as well. I'm sure your car is not as bad as mine. Mine needs everything, it was gutted no bolt on parts left at all aside from the sure grip and k frame and dash. The only part I am reusing is the rear roof structure, package tray, and one inner fender.

303 Mopar

It also depends on your skill level and budget. The more you can do the more you will save, however you are still in for $30k+ depending on how bad and what you want to do with you car.  Remember, Mopar parts are 3x Cheby and Ferd.

Thanks for the replys guys.  I plan to do just about everything myself. I got lucky buying it from a coworker that used it as a parts car. He only charger me $1200. It's a roller with all the suspension, rear axle, doors, dash frame, trunk lid, rear bumper and that's about it. I had to buy a set of wheels and tires for it to get it home so total I have 1600 bucks into it. I'm looking to make a fun driver out of it and not a numbers matching car. It's missing the fender tag anyways.  The amount of rust in the inner rockers and the couple supports worries me but every part I need for it is available bit like you said it's the most expensive parts of the big 3s.   I guess I might as well just do it.  When it's done in 10 years I will appreciate it that much more cause I did the work myself.

The second generation Chargers have beautiful lines, but I would punt on this particular one. It might actually be cheaper to own a boat!

What you have will have to be a labor of love. Post pics if you go forward with it. Best wishes.

NONE of these cars is worth it.  Why?  Because no matter how great of a car you have you'll almost never get back what you put into it financially.  You've got to do this as a labor of love.  If not, then it will never be worth it...

stripedelete

No.  Buy one already restored and let maintaining it be your "labor of love".

Well I guess a labor of love it will be, haha.  I don't have the money to buy a done car so this is the one.  I gotta just quit being a pussy and build her up.

Use photobucket it's free.

Photobucket is free and easy to use.  Just upload your pictures, copy the IMG link and paste the link into your post.  Just be sure to not upload anything anti-liberal/leftist and you'll be fine...

Nevermind the $$ its gonna cost but the time too if doing yourself the time is also killer. 5 years on my 70 and just got first bit of paint last week. We did everything but frame rails, firewall and inner rockers on my car. Close to 10k just in metal if i recall. Trying to forget how much lol. Incorrect engine in it. Had the interior but was all shot. So ya figure on $30k atleast and 5 years.

Watch the work they are doing on this Mini. It will either inspire the hell out of you, or you'll give up.

Honestly, their work has inspired me to make my charger far more awesome than any stock charger could ever be. Now, i just need to practice fabrication. I guess I'll just use this charger i have to practice on! :D

Oh, and these guys are hilarious.

That's wild! I watched all the episodes in one sitting. The instances where they had to cut out and redo parts that they had already finished is the story of my life it seems...

I made my first post on this forum in March 2009 and am just getting to paint.  These things can take a long time for us DIY's.

I AGREE with this guy.

Except...
YES, these cars are worth restoring IF you enjoy doing it and you want to keep it awhile. I have about $35,000 to $40,000 into mine over 15 years. I love the damn thing so its value is more than money.

Aside from what has been said, you have to take a step back and really ask yourself, do you have the tools, space, and skills to fix it? A lot of guys believe they do, but end up finding themselves in over their heads and try to bail. But once you start cutting stuff up and do not complete the job, you are likely going to lose a pile of money. If you have experience with welding, have the tools, and know how a body is put together, then go for it. It will take time, but that is okay.
