4 Speed Hurst Shifter Stick?

Hey Guys - I have a question about my shifter and the shifter I want. Currently I have the Hurst setup with the two bolts holding it in place with this shift stick(http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hurst-5388585-MOPAR-PISTOL-GRIP-4-Speed-1970-Charger-GTX-Roadrunner-Non-Console-/281568198806). The throw is EXTREMELY LONG through the gears and I find it annoying when trying to shift quickly. I want to replace the shift stick for a ball handle and have the stock non console bend to the shift stick(http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mopar-4-Speed-Coronet-Charger-RoadRunner-B-Body-GTX-1966-70-Transmission-Kit-68-/201384818210). If you look in that picture it's the correct stick I want with the ball end and the two bolts attaching it at the base. I think this will yield a shorter throw. But for the life of me I cant seem to find THAT stick anywhere. It usually comes up with the old style PUSH IN Hurst stick and those are big bucks.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

The length of throw isn't determined so much by the stick length as it is the shifter mechanism. The '68-'69 shift mechanism has shorter levers than the '70. Installing a '70 mechanism in the '68-'69 noticeably shortens the throw (and makes it a little harder to shift). '70 is on the right in the pic below.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

It's definitely the one on the left. I just want to find a stock stick that fits those two holes.

As John correctly stated you have a mismatch of parts Rich  :yesnod:

The long pistol grip shifter requires the 70 shift mechanism. Using the earlier style shift mechanism lengthens the throw significantly. Guys converting to a pistolgrip on pre 1970 equipped 4 speeds used to often complain about their knuckles getting sore from hitting the dash while powershifting.

Personally, I really like the pistolgrip and it will work much better with the proper mechanism installed.  :2thumbs:

You have 2 choices :

- Change to a 70 shift mechanism to match your pistolgrip shift handle
- Change the shift handle to a 68-69 style to match your current shift mechanism

Or option #3 ; Live with sore knuckles  ;)

Thanks Ron! I'm thinking of going with this setup. Hurst 5384078 replacement stick with a white Knob. I think this will also fix another issue the current shifter has which is "finding Neutral". It has a hard time swinging left to right. Feels clunky.

Thanks for the input guys!

Edit: I think I have this kit installed in the car currently(https://www.hurstshiftersonline.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=342&idcategory=41). But I stlll want to change it back to the other handle/knob.

Rich,

The kit you linked to has the correct 70 mechanism with the pistolgrip shifter....it's a matched setup  :yesnod:

You have the earlier shifter mechanism with the long handle pistolgrip which is mismatched and results in the long throw shifts.  :P

This one should work fine....it's the correct shift arm for the shift mechanism you currently have installed in your Coronet  :2thumbs:

Let us know how it works once you swap out the shift handles  :icon_smile_cool:
